Yeah, his books are pretty good indeed. Although I recommend starting with A Wild Sheep Chase, as that is considerably lighter than stuff like 1Q84 or Wind-Up.

Try asking around in /hbg/ when you get stuck on a step, they're (generally) willing to spoonfeed.
It's a lot of steps, but once you've gotten through the preliminaries and to the actually instructions it should be more straightforward. No need to understand what's happening behind the scenes even in Plailect goes into detail.
For example, all in need in Part 1 - Homebrew is the 17 steps at the bottom.
