How do I do .5 "A" presses?
You see, there are three stages to pressing any button, the first is pressing it, the second is holding it down and the third is letting go of the button.
If you press the A button and enter a different level while holding it you effectively started the level with half an A press.

Essentially you cant literally perform half an a press. It's just a terminology/convention when considering fewest possible inputs segmented runs of sm64
Hold the A button down.
It doesn't count as a full press, because the game reads an "A" press as 3 parts. Holding it down doesn't complete all 3 parts, but does complete some, resulting in the term "half an A press". It's really more of a .666666 repeating "A" press, however.

I didn't grow up with Super Mario 64, but let me explain what he meant in a very simple way:
If you jump into a painting, keep the button pressed in, and then let go and jump again while in the level, then how many times have you clicked the a button? once. When he talks about half a presses, he's talking about one that leeched off of another in a feasible run that could have taken place beforehand, there's no such thing as a half a press if you're doing a complete run of the game.
