Wait why is nobody talking about this anymore?

Wasn't it supposed to be a revolution in gaming?
>>
>>337855032
It is revolutionary. There's just not a lot of content yet. In saying that, I haven't enjoyed video games this much since i had my Nintendo 64 as a kid.

Any time someone tries to have a mature discussion about it on /v/, it gets swarmed by shitposts.

It's also expensive and not many people have it, so there's not really much discussion that can be had.

I've had mine for around 6 weeks, feel free to ask me any questions.

Not surprising, it's a shitty gimmick only hyped by pajeets and "muh wyfoo" delusional retards.

>Any time someone tries to have a mature discussion about it on /v/, it gets swarmed by shitposts.

A prime example;
>>337855314

Both major headsets are completely sold out with big backlogs. This is the opposite of a flop.

Every single person who tries a Vive has their mind blown, no matter how skeptical they are beforehand.

Lots of kids on 4chan love to talk about shit they know nothing about.
>>
>>337855508
I mean if no one can have it then what's the point? When can people actually get these things that aren't all this wait list shit? When everyone's had their take on it we will know what the mass consensus was
>>
>>337855032
Hopefully Google can save VR.
>>
>>337855702
The mass consensus on the Vive is that it's absolutely incredible.

Source: any person who has used a Vive, including my grandma.
>>
>>337855793
Your grandma's reviews are paid for and you fucking know it.
>>
>>337855793
>Source: any person who has used a Vive
For like 20 minutes playing a golf game. The Vive's launch titles are all exclusively early access-tier indie games which you can play for a short period before getting bored, with very very few exceptions. $800 breeds doubt and with no killer titles it further breeds doubt.

https://youtu.be/fQ0JTkBZdyw
>>
For 800 dollars to get the VIVE... I feel as though I might as well wait a few years for a massive price decrease, a actual games library and wider older game support.

I'm not exactly excited about exerting my energy by moving my limbs around after a day at work when all I wanna do is relax and play a good game. I am however excited about the virtual desktop, having a giant virtual screen to play my current games on in the highest resolution seems like a good idea.

Some other worries I have is that it'll be annoying to wear on my head after a hour goes by, I've already got this problem with my headphones and I've bought the most comfortable ones I could find.

Perhaps waiting is my best bet, considering they'll likely have a better 2nd generation model out in a few years anyway.
>>
So where are all the anime girlfriend games I was promised
>>
>>337856339
Why do people keep posting this horrible cherrypicked video? 20 minutes of SHIT INDIE GAMES which have nothing to do with how good the technology is, taken from a TEN HOUR long stream of almost nothing but high praise for the tech.
>>
>>337855793
False. There is no mass consensus as the masses don't have experience with it yet.

Answer the question, Tim
>>
>>337856339
Not this video again. These guys are the most boring, fun hating people ever. It astonishes me that they are the face of a company.

Yes, there's a lot of shitty rushed content, but there's also some amazing content.

The Lab
Space Pirate Trainer
Tilt Brush
Audioshield
Budget Cuts

These things alone make owning a Vive worthwhile for me.

In saying that....

>>337856614
While i (and everyone who tries it) understands that it is incredible technology and has huge implications in all industries... it is not worth it for the average person yet.

If you are wealthy or a VR enthusiast, you will not be disappointed. It's fucking fun, and there's some killer content. Portal Stories: VR just released, and i cant wait to go play it.

However i would not recommend anyone else buy into VR yet. Give it a few years.

Cost too much and need a beefy machine, which most people does not have, if you are checking Steam Stats.
>>
Why doesn't steam vr's menu allow me to open the menu at an angle? Maybe I want to be looking up when I am using desktop mode.
>>
>>337857004
This will likely be resolved with Gen2.

Foveated rendering will mean that games are LESS INTENSIVE to run than on a standard 1080p monitor.
>>
>>337856947
Those games are alright but more like demos of what can be done with the headset.
Theres no good sitting experiences with the vive and theres no 3rd party support unless you count in vorpx compatible games which look like garbage.
>>
>>337856745
Then you haven't watch the stream. Giant Bomb's consensus was that the tech is too expensive, and without any pinnacle titles to justify the money and space cost the Vive demands, the Vive's hype surrounding it will slowly diminish. All the Vive has is shit indie games with maybe 1 decent game from Valve, which is still short-lived due to it's ultimate lack of content.

The tech is fucking great, but there are no worthwhile titles for it, there are few external uses for it (anything other than gaming), it demands a lot of physical space to work, no matter where the cable is it is a trip hazard, each sensor needs a power socket of it's own, it has teething problems like fucking up if you move the headset while a game is loading, and so on. If you think Giant Bomb's stream is nothing but positivity, go watch it and prove yourself wrong.
>>
>>337857445
I did watch it myself. They praised the tech for being good and called shit games shit games. /v/ on the other hand takes that to mean that vr is a flop, that it will never be able to justify it's price and other complete nonsense.
Hence especially dumb posts like >>337855314

The problem with the video being posted is that it's shitty clickbait trying to make vr itself look bad when its actually just a bunch of shit games.
>>
Check out the void.
>>
>>337857421
Well, two of the games are demos (Budget Cuts and Space Pirate Trainer).

These companies only had 1 year to create their game, from Vive announcement to launch. So obviously there isn't anything that people have spent years creating yet.

I have no desire to play seated experiences. I can emulate Oculus games, but i just dont see the appeal.

Bigger experiences will come in time.

>>337857445
> there are few external uses for it
What?

Training (military/medical/etc)
Education
Social
Business

Every fucking industry in the world will have major uses for VR.

You can't honestly expect first gen VR to instantly take over the world... It will take time, and this launch has been extremely successful with extremely good hardware.
>>
>>337856947
WHY CRITICISE THE VIVE? DO YOU HATE FUN?

It's this straw man which makes anyone defend it look like a fucking moron. The amount of actual worthwhile content is poultry compared to the abject shovelware which the Vive store is drowning in. I'm not denying there are good games, but there are so fucking few of them it makes it difficult to justify the price tag of 3 x PS4's, which doesn't require a 4 x 5 metre of empty space for you to use.
>>
Can I play Skyrim with this shit? It sounds fucking fun to play some kind of VR Skyrim

People retaliate to any criticism of it with "Next time! Next time!" when that next time is seriously up in the air. If the threat of the industry just flat disappearing before that next time is such a terrifying thought that your own devs have a term for it ("VR Winter"), then you should probably reconsider a great many things.

>Training (military/medical/etc)
Any 1st-world air force already has professional, custom-tailored flight sims made for training, and is much more realistic considering you're sitting inside a cockpit made to look like the real thing as opposed to holding two remotes that you need to press buttons, program MFD's, etc. Same applies to private companies like airlines.

The money isn't worth it for grunts, practical hands-on exercises are the only way to learn many things across the majority of disciplines and is beneficial for fitness and muscle memory. Medical usage seems promising but again it's the physical practice and what I've said before which is much more valuable than a simulation where you cannot accurately represent dexterity due to the limitations imposed by remotes

>Education
Even with the price dropped to say, $200, a quarter of it's current price, it's still too impractical and still too expensive to utilize and deploy en-mass into something like a class room or lecture theatre. This and every child's eyesight is going to deteriorate rapidly in a matter of years.

>Social
This is nothing new, while still a legit use, there's no additional value to it over talking to someone face-to-face over skype or just talking using VOIP. If you think there is, please elaborate.

>Business
Literally what, for what purpose?

If we're talking about the concept of VR in general, it's just worthless pondering because it's going to take so long for the tech to sufficiently develop, and for the price to drop to an affordable margin.
>>
>>337855032
It's HDTV/Blu-Ray 2.0. It's expensive and there's almost no worthwhile content for it. Everyone shits on it now, and rightfully so.

But once the cost goes down and the tech improves it'll almost assuredly be something worth owning.
>>
>>337855032

>So many different VR headsets
>Community gonna be divided as fuck
>Tiny game library

Well think about the 3ds. It was doing bad at the start til there were more games out.
However this is a different ball park since there are so many competitors.

It could ultimately fail if things don't fall into place the right way.
Lots of companies trying to play it safe lately, idk if now is a good time for VR to be trying to come out.
>>
>>337860564
They eventually will all be under the same "framework"

There are currently 3 different types of play right now.
Sitting, Standing, and Room Scale.

The Vive covers all 3
The Rift Covers 1.5 (Sitting + some standing)
Open VR isnt even out, but apparently is just going to be a Rift Copy.

Steam has Occulus and Vive games. What's complicated about it?
>>
I got one. Pretty cool, but all the games are too arcade'y. Out of ammo had the potential to be a sweet strategic tower defense, but oh no got to zoom you in and shoot first person. I didn't like FPS before and making it VR did not help.Still, the future looks good, I just someone makes a game with some depth.

In contrast, dark souls 3 came out around the same time and I can't stop playing it. My first souls game, and to me it is more revolutionary than Vive. I can't believe what I have been missing.

Just got my Vive last Friday, the only thing that's a letdown is it's pretty difficult to get anime waifu bullshit made for the Oculus to run on the Vive. A lot of the MMD made content that was around for the DK1 and DK2 don't run on the Vive.

Going to try out Custom Maid 3D 2 tonight.

It's like tv or the movie theatre. People enjoy sitting on a couch watching a screen. People enjoy going out to the movies for the experience.
People enjoy sitting at the computer using a mouse and a keypad or board.the VR thing is a niche market, just like odd sports like badminton, darts, etc.
It might take off, but honestly, I like the gaming world as it is. Just like chess, would you change chess to a newer version? No because it's not broken, and people enjoy it

I have one too, and I agree it is absolutely amazing and not a gimmick whatsoever.
