After TPS/FPS began to become the dominant market Insomniac transitioned from Spyro to Ratchet because, as they put it, "Spyro had no hands and thus could not hold a gun."

As much as I liked the levels in 2 and 3, I didn't like how they didn't really mesh well with the hubworld, if that makes any sense. Like in 1 the levels looked like extensions of the hubworld

It's true that Spyro 1's worlds kept a common theme throughout each hub, but 2 and 3 having more random world themes meant more variety and it worked out well.

Ice Cavern may have not been a desert level like everywhere else in Peace Keepers, but it's architecture, enemy and dragon designs all were consistent with the rest of the world.
I recently gave the second game another go and it seems way easier than I remember it being. I did the trolley thing in under ten minutes.

They wanted shootans, and Spyro was deemed "too limited" for that or anything else. Spyro 3's characters/minigame focus was likely another symptom of this.
At least he had a nice trilogy.
