It's very similar to Disgaea, but has more differences.
For one, it's Free-Flow (You can move wherever you want) rather than being restricted to Tile-Based movement (Disgaea). Story is much more serious and is an actual tear jerker, if you like tropical themed games then this is for you.
Sadly, it's WAY to easy to abuse mechanics to power level yourself and thanks to this, it's way too easy in general. (You can solo everything with just Marona alone if you know what you're doing). This is because everything has 'titles'. You can put a Failure title to a high level dungeon to make Lv. 100 character Lv. 20 while still retaining the same experience that you get from killing a Lv. 100.
Also, there is almost NO Post-game, which sucks for a Disgaea-like title.

Well, sort of. Truth be told I never had much interest in Phantom Brave. I don't really know much about it. I played Disgaea PC and thought it was all right but nothing special, and if this is basically a weaker Disgaea clone I don't see why I should be interested, personally. Still happy for those who do though and I really do like the idea of porting these old games to PC.

I personally like Phanton Brave more than Disgaea. I liked the free roam battle system instead of Disgaea's grid based thing. And the story I liked more. Not as funny, lot more heartfelt I guess. I also found the random dungeons infinitely more fun than the item world will ever beimo.

Yeah, most of which were people who were opted into the Steam beta during Disgaea PC's initial release. Anyone opted into Steam's beta had trouble running the game while those who weren't ran it fine. Funnily enough Steam was the problem, not NISA's port. Later this was discovered and fixed in game, but since it had a poor initial release it was doomed in that department.
And yeah, the sprites don't look much better but the artwork and UI do. Arguably the map textures too, though that depends on who you are. Also all those graphics options and mouse support. Its not perfect, but its not a bad port. Give NISA credit where its due. NISA does not always fuck up.
