5 had great gameplay but the stealth gameplay of MGS works best indoors or in small outdoor environments like in 3. All I'll say about Metal Gear is that it may derive a tremendous amount of influence from film, and it may have a lot of cut-scenes, but these are all layered over top of fun, varied gameplay and interesting design choices. I recently played through the series completely blind (1-4) and I loved the absolute shit out of 1 and 2, but 3 was a huge letdown for me, they had so many unresolved plot points in 2 that I wanted to know more about, but instead it goes 50 years back and none of that stuff is resolved.
4 then answers literally everything but by then it's been so long and it doesn't feel like the continuation to 2 that could have been.
I didn't really realize that 3 should've been seen as a stand alone game until the end, maybe I would've liked it had I played it first, I'm assuming that's what everyone who loves 3 did.
