You can cheese Manus by standing on the right of the mist door, overlooking a chasm with darkness.
You should see Manus' red eyes and start shooting arrows at it.

I beat Manus on 1st attempt just now. I have a STR build with Full Havel and a +15 GReat Axe. I just tanked him with handed attacks and drank the Sunny D as needed. On to kill Gwynn now and then play Dark Souls II for the first time. (Prepare to be Disappointed?)

Dark Souls 2 is... ok. I found it incredibly easy and the world design is really dull. People say the DLC is way better than the base game but I was so bored with the base game I couldn't bring myself to play it.
