Well, you're not "tricking" reality. You're just fulfilling the prophecy.
However, the fact that you in particular have dreams of Dagoth Ur long before you even know his name, and Azura specifically picks you before you even reach Morrowind should pretty solidly indicate that it doesn't matter if you're literally the reincarnation of Nerevar, they consider you to be, which means you probably are.
I mean, neither Dagoth Ur nor Azura can know the future, so the fact that they both pick the same person is kinda telling.
Though it really wouldn't matter anyway. You're not "tricking" anyone. A prophecy is just a story of what's supposed to happen, and you make it all happen. You fulfill it, regardless of who you actually are. I mean, there's no way to prove that you're NOT Nerevar reborn, right?

Nerevar didn't have any special powers, he was just an important guy. You too become important through your actions, but the crux of it is really getting Vivec on board so he can tell you what's really going on. Or if not Vivec, then Yagrum Bagarn.
The fact that you can beat the game without fulfilling the prophecy or becoming the Nerevarine, but in a way that still "follows the plot," is very telling.

Nerevar, the ancient dunmer general, had a shitty magic ring but was mainly important for being charismatic. His achievement was uniting Veloth's people against the dwemer and defeating them at Red Mountain before they could unravel reality or whatever else might have happened.
Nerevar wasn't immune to age or to the Divine Disease, not least because the latter didn't exist in his time. And Nerevar may have been killed by those same cursed false-gods.
