Fun fact: the "holy trinity" was actually an Everquest community term for the trio of Warrior, Cleric and Enchanter, which was said to be the best grouping setup. People didn't start using it for tank/healer/dps until Arenanet starting using it as a pejorative that way.

I wonder why mmos don't get rid of pure dps, so everyone is forced to either heal or tank. preferably so that both do damage. so everyone does dps, the dps can be balanced that no class has advantages and everyone can feel good about being at the top of dps meter, while everyone also has another meaningful job to do.

Probably never, ideally pure dps shouldn't need to exist. DPS classes should be distinguished from one-another and tank/heal classes by utility they bring to raids.

It's not even good. It has huge gaping flaws that any longterm player could easily point out to you, and they're all easy fixes if you're willing to actually change the fucking game with actual changes that are real and impactful and not half-assed bullshit. WoW can't make those kind of changes because they involve major changes in game design, and you can't do changes of that scope in an already released game. Other MMOs don't have that excuse though. They don't have to jump into every pitfall WoW's trapped in, but they do it anyway because walking around the pitfall is too much effort.

All classes do damage, but damage types actually matter.
A 'DPS' would be someone specialized in a specific type of damage output, which could be any class.
Tanks would help mitigate damage to allies, supports for buffing/debuffing, recovery specialists (not just flat out healing), and possibly people who use alternative skills involving spotting enemies (scouting), disarming traps or devices, and fixing/maintaining party equipment and/or supplies.

Final Fantasy XI. As a support mage, you still have lots you can do, and have to maintain numerous buffs and remove debuffs rapidly. Tanking is fairly gear and macro intensive as well.
The problem is that most players are shit at the game, so you gotta get a good group together for it to be fun, or else it'll just be a snoozefest of better-safe-than-sorry setups and strats.

I like the healing classes in ffxiv, as you can deal out good damage, stance dance n stuff. City of villains had the healers be the best aoe damage class as well, but I only used dominators in that game

I kind of like WildStar's implementation of healers, at least in concept. Almost all classes can be considered hybrids of some sort, so not only can the healer also contribute outside of just healing, but because of the game's aiming system, you can't just sit there and fiddle with a menu, you've got to move around and aim your healing effects to compensate with other players. It's just a little bit of added extra depth that's appreciated even if it does sound more involved on paper.
