A lot of anime VAs just end up in the job from failed acting careers, and some end up able to get better voice work and exclusively go to that. That's phasing out with the popularity of anime in younger people (who are now grown up) making people actually want to work in that industry, but during Baker's time a good half or more of anime/jp-game VAs didn't choose to work on that stuff aside from having to so they leave it once they can. Another good example from someone arguably better at their job even would be Travis Willingham.
It's okay, Matt Mercer can do a voice that sounds identical to Baker anyway, but I do miss having them both around.

If you look up any interviews, look at any "advice" they give, etc they all openly very willingly admit that the way they got into anime voice acting was "by trying to become an actor" and their number one advice to become one is try to be an actor and if that doesn't pan out you usually can go this direction. They went into acting schools and acting training for years, tried to act, failed, and jumped to another job (voice acting). Most also DID have at least one or two credited acting roles beforehand or during even, especially the females and of course JYB. Many also did stage acting for awhile but no big productions, this was especially true in the early 00s where "failed actors" meant failed stage play actors, not TV/movie.
A lot are also ex "child actors" such as sam riegel and jaffe who never got any real work beyond whatever small roles they had as kids.
Also I can't agree that spending years of college and specialized training in a field and then never being hired doesn't count as a "failed career" in that field. What you said kind of contradicts itself - you say "did they get any credited roles?" followed by "nothing means anything unless they tried and FAILED.
How would never passing an audition not count as trying and failing? Having no credited roles just proves even more how fucking bad their acting career was - because it never went ANYWHERE. Though again, most have at least a few on some level.
