The story isn't great, but unless you're a retard who needs everything explicitly spelled out to them, it's not particularly hard to follow without ever touching the data logs. The stuff in the data logs is just just fluff - all the relevant story elements are easy enough to piece together from the cutscenes. The amount of people who bitch about terms like l'cie and fal'cie not being explicitly explained is staggering: it takes an hour or two at most to get the basic idea of what all the terms mean if you pay any attention at all.
I don't like the hallways, but the main draw of the game for me is the battle system.

the issue is not just the name but not showing what they are talking about or even describing what they are talking about, made up names is fine only when you put it context. Like let's say final fatasy 7. They use materia and mako right? they immediately explain what it is how to use and what it means to those around with a few simple lines of dialogue. My problem is that in 13 they don't do that and just give you side reading instead of being good writers and pointing out in the main story. Another example star wars. Luke and obiwan, are about to get a pilot and quickly explain the bar they go into is filled with the worst scum of the galaxy in just 1 simple sentence. In 13 they don't bother to do that and expect you to do homework on their made up words instead of saying "hey that God branded me and my sister was chosen by the opposing god." What 13 does is take that all away which actually aids in character development because this shows how knowledgeable this character is on their own world. But we have everyone running around with their heads cut off till they magically meet up again. It was almost insulting to even watch that tripe.

they mention the world below, that could be it was underground, plus they two people from pulse in their party already. they don't mention what pulse even is either a country or a planet or anything, even before you get to pulse you are wandering cacoon but each area is radically different you think you ain't in Kansas anymore. The point is this, you don't know anything other than words that are thrown around and you have to go along the ride, things pass by with no explination that are important to the story already being told, but fuck it let's toss it the data logue there is drama to get to! The entire time you play this game all the characters already know some key elements to the story that the player doesn't and the developers think you should know already before you pick up the controled or back story is completely irrelevant and you should just listen to then ramble on with made up words in hopes you figure it out. If the story was so good then why would you need a Data Logue discussing key plot points that weren't mentioned? They knew there was a grand pulse, they knew they were on it when they got there, the problem is the player was left in the dark because the devs. didn't feel like adding a few exralines.
