Also, the law system was easy as fuck to understand and circumvent, the game gave you all of the tools you needed to overcome it. Hell, you even had a button on the overworld dedicated to "what laws will be in effect when I get to this spot," not to mention they throw antilaw cards at you with such ridiculous frequency that you can just stock up on the ones that irritate you the most.
And on top of that, you can lose or forfeit non-story missions and they don't cause game overs.

Ihaven't played much of the original three so I can't actually say that it's much worse (and again, if III DS isn't the worst, then there are a lot of bad FFs). What I did feel was that a lot of the tacked on story bits were fucking pointless and added nothing to the game and in terms of the levelling and combat systems they were atrocious things that promoted grinding while making certain classes feel worthless. The final dungeon is a horrid slog only doable because you can close a DS and suspend the game since there are no save points and its generally boring and time consuming.

Xenosaga II is much worse than I. Xenosaga as a whole has a lot of problems but the first game creates a lot of curiosity about the world and sets up some pretty big events all with a generic but mostly snappy battles system and a bunch of long-winded cutscenes that sometimes exceed TV show length (arguably to its detriment). Overall the story offers horror and hope that hits very close to the main characters and less on the institutions and organizations that take the fore later on.
The second suffers from the flaws of the first while also adding a break system that while interesting at first, gets very repetitive and becomes basically the only practical way to kill enemies if you aren't overleveled because it's the fastest way to do so but in general all the fights feel longer than they need to be. The move towards a more realistic style was marred by the problem that the models were fucking ugly as sin, and in the Western release the dub voices were changed and often for the worse. A lot of the story bits fall flat and the later bits about the immigrant fleet feel like babbie's first gnosticism meets babbie's first intergalactic space politics.
