That actually happened.
All of the characters in P3 had massive issues derived from their respective pasts. MC saw his parents die and has been living with the Dark Hour for the past ten years. Yukari's dad was killed, both her and her mom were chased out because everyone blamed her dad for the disaster ten years ago, and her mom's a slut. Junpei's mom died when he was young and his dad's an abusive drunk. Fuuka's situation isn't as extreme, but their poor upbringing resulted in Fuuka having very poor self esteem and no social skills, resulting in her latching onto anyone who treated her kindly, even a bitch like Natsuki (as she was in the past). Akihiko's parents died and his sister died soon after and he's blamed himself ever since. Mitsuru's been swallowed by the guilt of her family's actions, even though none of it was even remotely her fault. Shinjiro accidentally murdered someone. Ken's mom died, her death was misconstrued as an accident and he's never had any closure on the issue. Aigis is robot.
The only one who doesn't have massive issues is the dog.
P3 has some of the most fucked up playable characters in the series, probably comparable to Eternal Punishment's.

Pretty much all the cast in every game but 4 have pretty fucked up problems. 1 was a little less subdued, but it was still there if you listened to the characters. 2 I think was the pinnacle since it had shit like compensated dating, but the crux of all their problems was family related so maybe not.
4, though, I can see why fans of the series up until that point might have been confused. It didn't have the same vibe at all.

Fuuka's issues have to do with her trying too hard to please everyone because she wants to feel useful, but she later finds that she only really needs to be herself and to not hide what she likes in fear of being seen as weird.

Considering that she's the only one in SEES with two living parents, she's also there as a counterpoint to the potential argument that having a full nuclear family would keep you from getting fucked up somehow. They're physically there for her, but they're emotionally unreachable because they're obsessed with her academic performance to the exclusion of everything else.
Junpei's problem was that he didn't know that he was in a Jrpg and wasn't the main character. Seriously in the first shadow situation they all go "shut up junpei let's do what he says." Then after you as MC prove yourself to be hot shit it develops further. You as a team take down a shadow but in the following cutscene Titsuru thanks only the MC. The one thing about the persona 3&4 that always bothers me is how much all the characters suck the MC's dick.
