There was the possibility of your opponent summoning, say, a Summoned Skull then equipping it with an Axe of Despair. And then your BEWDs are fucked. Alternatively, you could have all 3 BEWDs in your hand but don't have the resources to summon them, so instead you could poly from the hand and get out an Ultimate.
If you knew you could get an OTK and could summon them though, having 3 BEWDs on the field is the better option, especially considering Ultimate has no protection whatsoever.

Fusion is always inefficient if done naturally. You usually don't even need the cards in the field. You almost never do special types of summons for board space. Only madolche and pendulums might do something like that. You do special types of summons like xyz or fusion of for their effects / stats, else to use them as fodder for other summons like XYZ

You have 2 special spell slots on the left and right of the field. Each pendulum monster is both a monster and a pendulum spell. You can EITHER summon it as a regular monster or place it in the spell zone for its spell effect (but its monster effect is not used in this case)
Each pendulum had a pendulum scale. A number. Let's say your left side pendulum spell has a pendulum scale of 1. Let's say your right side pendulum has a scale of 8. In addition to their permanent spell effects, you can now summon from your hand any monsters from level 1 to level 8 for free. No tributes.
Let's say you have 5 monsters and your opponent spends all his cards to destroy every single one of them. They don't go to the graveyard. They go face-up on top of the extra deck. On your next turn, BAM. you summon ALL 5 of them again for free. They die again? You just bring them back again!
