>Original Half Life team has left Valve or retired from development
>Only 30% of the people that worked on HL2 are still at Valve
>Valve is more interested in cash shops and gimmicks like trading cards and consoles instead of actually developing games.
>Half Life anniversary came and went without Valve acknowledging it.

Psychologists ruined Valve.

Will we ever see Half Life 3?
>>
No, I don't think they could ever live up to the hype.
>>
Valve is also providing the best digital distribution service. I'm comfortable with HL3 never being released now, like other people have said it can't live up to the hype and I don't know if bit needs to exist anyway.
>>
No. Peak hype was 2012. No one cares anymore.

I think Half Life should stay in the 2000's. It really was a thing of its time.

>all those afternoons spent watching hl2 gmod vids for hours on end
>>
Be patient you just have to wait a little bit longer.

>Half-Life 3 is a hyper-realistic simulation.
>Narrative revolves around ideas of control.
>You play a randomized average citizen.
>World might be run by aliens, but you're not sure.
>Game is about figuring out the truth.
>HL1 and HL2 are included as playable mini-games.
>Secrets and easter eggs in the mini-game connect to the larger mission.
>You must study the hints and make connections.
>Victory when you finally figure out the truth...
>You're already playing HL3

Again with this, there is no hype, they killed it, they never built any, maybe with the ending creating some stakes, I do wish they came clean, after all the key people that they lost from the original team, say "yep we are not working on it because of X".

Is not like it is their duty but it would be nice.

Also this is still a thing

When asked for a status update on the Portal and Half-Life projects, Abrams responded with the following:

>Not yet, but they’re in development. And we’ve got writers, and we’re working on both those stories. But nothing that would be an exciting update.

I used to think that it was great they got Steam because that way they never had to rely on a publisher, but they just realized they do not need to make videogames.

I remember when the Pyro trailer came out they started selling (more) merchandise, there was a plushie shaped like the pony in the trailer that was like 40 dollars and it was SOLD OUT, I mean think about that, they released a trailer for a free game and they made more money from those snippets of merchandise in HOURS than what many indie devs make in months.

I wonder if the advantage of an self-aware AI might be that the route followed by the player truly leaves the developer's agency.
>>
Why make games when you can rake in cash from a bunch of non-effort shit
Just tear apart your communities to make a quick buck

No shit. No one really expects a sequel. All it takes is an announcement then BOOM everyone is on board. Unlike meme shooters like id-shit Half Life's style is still relevant to the gamer zeitgeist.
>>
>>337694512
The players ruined Valve when they said to them "yes, I will pay for in game cosmetics"
>>
>>337694512
the notion that it has to leave up to some hype is retarded. it's literally only relevant to the shit eating imbeciles who expect the game to be some mind blowing out of body spiritual experience that brings them closer to god or some shit, just because of the legacy of hl1 and 2.

It just has to be a good game and most people would be happy. and valve still has plenty talent and technical expertise in the company to pull that off.
>>
>>337694512
>Psychologists ruined Valve.
what?
>>
It wouldn't even live up to anyone's expectations at this point. HL1 + 2 were amazing for their time, but what would HL3 even do today to stand out?
>>
>>337694512

No, Valve is just a platform/engine owner now and they'll never make another game.

Would anyone actually want to at this point? Especially if all the people who made it what it is have gone. Some things are better off dead

>Would anyone actually want to at this point?
All I'd like to see is an official text file finally answering who and what the gman is. After HL2 and the episodes, I don't want another tech demo or disjointed collection of set pieces with infinite ammo crates
>>
>>337694512
Even if HL3 comes out, everyone will hate it. No matter how good it is.
In a way i'm happy it never existed, i don't want to see the franchise going the duke nukem forever way.
>>
>>337696446
>Especially if all the people who made it what it is have gone.
This doesn't bother me. Television shows and movie series have been saved/improved by outsiders. It can work with videogames too.
>>
>>337696159
Valve hired an experimental psychologist sometime back in 2011/2012 to "help craft even more compelling gameplay experiences for future Valve titles."

Basically they hired the guy to make the closed consumer ecosystem/skinner box model they pioneered with Mannconomy EVEN MORE addictive.

Eh. They could have tasked the guy to do something really interesting with singleplayer experiences rather than just how to make more money from multiplayer shit

Most people really really enjoyed Morrowind and Oblivion and Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, and Fallout 4. Half Life 3 would get its cocked sucked.
>>
>>337696709
Valve don't even know who G-Man is, he's just written in as a mysterious deus ex machina. There's no really answer to that question that won't be contrived.

Well it's no coincidence that the only game they've made since the guy was hired was DOTA2

We live in a world where Shenmue 3, Duke Nukem Forever, FF versus 13 and The last guardian are all came or coming out.

This reality however hasn't gotten HL3 to come out though, it shall forever remain in limbo.

The Half Life brand can only be very profitable for so long. It is logical to get profit out of it before its too late.
>>
They'll comission those fucks who make TF2 comics to draw some hastily made conclusion and call it a day, at best
>>
I just want closure. I can't move on with my life until they finish the story. I don't care if it's groundbreaking or not. I am literally going to quit videogames forever once I've played HL3

I don't think Gaben even cares any more. Now he loves cars and hates nerds.

The biggest clue that something's coming is Source 2. Valve aren't going to spend 10 years developing an engine to use on a VR tech demo and Dota 2.

When something comes, it will be a surprise.
>>
hey, I seen this image from the front page. I normally listen to atonal music, while reading new modernist lit, but I did enjoy the Half-life 2 game. Is this a kind of meme, that the third game is not going to be produced? Or is it going to be created?

Good joke. HL2 has a pretty terrible story as well.

>>337695721
Naturally, it's the only way the system can work.
It's all driven by player agency.

The brilliance of its design is that the user doesn't realize it. It's made so that the game can only be beaten (and get to the best gameplay), once that realization is had.

Valve just released the first gen Holodeck. Yes, some years back they did say they weren't looking to make anything VR exclusive - this was a stupid misstatement. Of course they're going to release more VR content. And Half-Life is already a series made for VR.

>first gen Holodeck

That's a grand statement. I have a Vive. I also have a Rift. They're VR for sure, but I don't think they deserve to even be compared to something like the Holodeck. That's just misleading and playing into hype too much.

Who knows if they're going to do a Half Life 3 though, but if they do, yeah I would imagine it would be a VR exclusive.

Also, some years back, or you know, just 2 years ago, Valve didn't even know they would be making VR hardware with HTC, so it makes sense they wouldn't say anything about dedication to VR yet.
