ITT post games that are undeniably outdated and completely made obsolete by their successors, and are only worth remembering for their place in history.
Persona 1-4
DOOM
Dominions: Priests, Prophets and Pretenders, 2 and 3. It's a good example of a series that has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary (for example, the number of factions has quadrupled from 20 to almost a hundred).

persona 1 is correct, the rest hold up fine you fucking memelord
>>337686629
doom1 is still exactly as good as it was like 20 years ago
Any half life
>>337688035including 3
>>337686503
Rogue
Doesn't the Japanese version of Wizardry look much nicer?
>>337686503
man that apple 2 UI is shit
the original wizardry games are still worth playing they just require some imagination
>>337688362
there are a bunch of versions which look nicer and japan get a remaster of the first 3 on ps1 but no translation unfortunately
>>337686503
thanks doc

I want to play them but don't want to shell out $35 dollarydoos (or even the $17.50 it drops to sometimes).
Is Conquest of Elysium as similar as it looks? And is 3 any good since it's like $2.49 right now?
>>337686503
zelda ocarina of time
every later release is better hands down
>>337686503
Space Invaders maybe? Personally I think most games don't age as bad as wizardry. That's the only game I would truly call outdated.
Wolfenstein 3D.
Doom made it obsolete.
>>337687436
Persona 1 is the best Persona though, at least until 5 comes out
>>337690092
even diehard persona fans will tell you P1's gameplay isn't worth it
P2 story is worth slogging through the messy mechanics
>>337690261
>diehard persona fans will tell you P1's gameplay isn't worth it
casuals
>>337690464
even with P2 you need like 3 different guides open at any given time
>>337686503
>implying
Bet you didn't even get out of the first room in Wiz4 you casual piece of shit.
>>337690543
But P2 is fucking easy
>>337690261
i liked persona 1 gameplay and the story is more interesting than any of the other games
>>337690574
in theory i guess you could just rush through it but you will miss out on like half the entire game.
>>337690807
just out of curiosity, what did you like more in P1 that wasn't improved or streamlined in P2?
>>337686503
Dark Souls
Doom/2
XCOM
>>337690807
>Only in P1 and barely in P2 are Jungian concepts mentioned and explored
>Shadows are excised from P3 and practically jokes in P4
What went wrong?
>>337690548
thinking you were hot shit for beating wiz4 is so 90s
nowadays anyone with half a brain would realize just how fucking retarded it all is, especially the original version without the step freeze

They share a lot of assets and kinda share the same setting but the style of game is very much different.
Dominions is wargame-y with far more involved mechanics (for example, besides having more involved damage calculations, you also deploy your troops and give them basic scripted orders, battles in CoE are automatic), has significantly more content (for example, there's about 3k units, CoE probably has less than 1k) and is most commonly played in play-by-e-mail format in multiplayer. It's also much more serious in tone, with most factions based around various mythologies and history rather than fantasy archetypes
Conquest of Elysium is clearly "Dominions light" in terms of mechanics but instead of calling it a wargame, I'd rather describe it as "strategy roguelike": it has very varied factions, heavily randomized maps and all kinds of silliness that might cause you to lose very quickly unless you play super-conservatively but you don't really mind (or that's the intent) because of the starting variety. I wouldn't say CoE is worthless but it's very much clear which is the better-made game and one that has the potential to last for thousands of hours, and which one is a "coffee break game".
About CoE3? Like Dominions, each version is a direct upgrade over the previous one. A lot of factions/classes have become far more interesting to play with new unique rituals (for example, the game now has several different planes that mostly run in the background but can sometimes be interacted with, like a demonologist opening a portal to Hell in enemy territory, with infernal armies then pouring out to this world, or you can go there and defeat the Demon Lords as some sort of voluntary endgame). Combat is still fully automated but the rules are far superior and make it more interesting to watch battle replays, and decisions like unit-selection are much more interesting now.
I guess you could do worse for $3 but it's worse than 4 and Dominions.

are you kidding me dude, P3P has fucking Jungian references all over its intro, Minako/Minato anima/animus etc
>>337686503
I've played SFC port of Wizardry 1+2+3, and it's not unplayable by any means, but alignment shit and stats decreasing upon level up is fucking annoying.
