>dies from a bullet or stab wound during cutscenes

Why is this allowed?

Are there any games where gameplay mechanics remain even during cutscenes?

Fuck this bullshit. Dead Rising 2 and DR2:OTR had a very bad case of this.
Just plain old guns aren't the main focus in the game, so they're all piss weak. Chuck can take 270 handgun bullets in the right conditions.

Yet they pull this shit in a cutscene

Worse still in DR2:OTR when Frank whom is even more battle hardened than Chuck gets dropped by one less bullet than he did in the same bad end.

>>
>>337676613
Because, in the game world you're never hit by any of the bullets or literal meteors. Your character is never damage. Your character never dies.

The only meaningful damage is done in cut scenes because that is the only 'cannon' time the character takes damage.

Just because you're an absolute shitter who can't do a 100% no damage taken run doesn't mean that is the 'cannon' for the game.

Devil May Cry does it pretty well.

Referring to Final Fantasy 7 though, which tends to be the prime example for this kind of shit, it's important to note that a lot of bullet "hits" or sword "attacks" are meant to be seen as just barely grazing the target. Same with magical attacks; the target does its best to get as far out of the way as possible in the small amount of time granted, but he'll still get hit a little regardless. This is where critical hits come into play in that the "dodge" had greatly failed and the accuracy and force behind the attack was more powerful than usual.

Now obviously everyone's just standing still but do you really believe that you'd just sit there while a big ass rock was falling through the sky? You start running for the hills. Granted, part of the explosion might still hit you but you can survive that and keep going.

Finally, no one ever gets killed in FF because as long as one protag is still up, he'll protect the others. Losing HP means falling unconscious or getting knocked out while a phoenix down only wakes you back up.

Pic very related.
>>
My pals and I always joke that cutscene weapons were just more powerful.

Resident Evil in particular has a bad case of cutscene bullets. Bosses take rockets, grenades, shotgun blasts, etc. all day long, yet somehow those dang ol' cutscene handguns can shoot down helicopters and bring down bosses like its no one's business.
>>
>>337676613
there's scripted events in oblivion that are psuedo cutscenes
>>
It's because Sephiroth is a ridiculously higher level, has a sword that does 9,999 damage, and has a materia that adds +1 to the damage.

He kills Aerith by going over the damage limit and causing a stack overflow, which overwrites the memory value that sets Aerith as able to be revived with Phoenix Down.

Sephiroth basically hacks the game just to fuck with Cloud.

Fallout: New Vegas.

You can survive a 9mm bullet to the face point blank in game, and you can survive it in a cutscene as well.

Of course this only prompts FO3 retards to whine it's unrealistic and that nobody could survive a bullet to the head (despite it happening all the time IRL)

>Are there any games where gameplay mechanics remain even during cutscenes?
Dragon Quest
>>
Here's the solution: Stop making story heavy games.

It's frustrating playing through FF7 and Xenoblade and Bravely Default because the gameplay is garbage and doesn't even try to connect to the story, which lasts for hundreds of hours and is just full on cringeworthy.

See, Mario doesn't have this problem. His game isn't story focused. Same with classics like Mega Man, Pac Man, Metroid, etc. The minute you decide to throw a big retarded story into it, you've essentially destroyed your product.

>B-BUT i NEED A NARRATIVE BOO HOO

Then please, go read a book and leave video games.
>>
>>337676721
Phantasy Star 2 had Nei die because Neifirst's death also preventes Nei from reviving (this was butchered in translation)

Final Fantasy 4 had Palom and Porom willingly turn themselves to stone, so they couldnt be revived, and in 5 Galuf was fucking obliterated standing up do Exdeath solo

It's not impossible, but "stab to the chest" is pretty lame

>>337680805

There's nothing wrong with story in games. Final Fantasy just sucks at implementing it as story trumps everything else. There's plenty of story based games out there where the story events are incorporated into the gameplay correctly. From other RPGs to Adventure Games to even some platformers.

Aside from this, the stories in Final Fantasy games themselves suck so there isn't even a point in playing the games for the story.
>>
>>337693425
A story in a video is not bad so long as it connects to the game.
Metal Gear Solid (atleast the one I played) is a good example of this. In that game it almost feels as if the story persists the entire game and not just inside of cutscenes. In turn based RPGs its hard because you have no choice but to have your characters take massive amounts of damage every battle sequence. If there were a way to incorporate that into the story, than good.
>>
>>337694242

>There's plenty of story based games out there where the story events are incorporated into the gameplay correctly.
This is only true for games where they know to keep the story on a tight leash so it doesn't constantly clash with the gameplay. Whether it means keeping the story from pulling obvious asspulls (a level 1 moon killing your level 99 party member because the plot demanded it, getting caught by guys yu were mowing down minutes ago, etc).

Or where a game incorperates story events into gameplay. Have you ever played a SCUMM game? They're 90% story. But they go out of their way to make the events gameplay focused.

On the flip side, you have shitty games like TellTale 'Adventure' games. Which is literally just clicking all over the screen until you find the one item to set off the next cutscene. They don't even attempt to have gameplay.

Chrono Cross, to a point.

There's one scene where a character is stabbed and "killed" in a cutscene, but it occurs after a fight with the PC and, if the PC wins, they're noticeably wounded in the dialogue afterwards.
>>
>>337677404
Eh... pathetic... *unholster dual shotguns*... DIE! DIE! DIE!
>>
>>337696179

Chrono Cross really isn't a good example. Its full of the same stupid stuff as FFVII. Characters can hit an enemy with meteor shower a dozen times in battle. Then a simple stab with a knife changes the destiny of the entire world.
>>
>>337698116
As far as I remember, the only time a character takes a hit in Chrono Cross in a cutscene that you have controlled in battle was the aforementioned "kill" scene and when Kid gets poisoned. I think that's extremely admissible, however, since it's explained as a rare poison, and the injury that prompted the poison (dagger thrown) didn't really do anything to the character.

At least in Aeris' case the 0 HP status effect "Death" is really just a KO, and it was already established that a powerful guy with a sword, especially Sephiroth/Jenova, is way stronger than bullets in the prologue when Cloud took out those shinra guards, when he was by no means a super soldier yet. If you want to talk bullshit though, how about that time when Zack got felled by a sniper when his HP should've totalled in the thousands.

>>
>>337702470
That wasn't the point, don't you get it? Here's a hypothetical situation:
>"Sephiroth" has a move where he sends thousands of suns to your entire party
>we (barely) survive it, just heal up a bit and just keep fighting
>later on Sephiroth just sneaks up and stabs a party member with a fork
>party member dies forever

Okay, that's bullshit. Here's how IT SHOULD'VE WENT:
>"Sephiroth" has a really powerful move where he shoots a giant laser that attacks the whole party
>we (barely) survived it, heal up and continue fighting
>later on he does a desperation move or something, and does a ramped up super duper version of the laser and lays it all on one party member for 10 text boxes, IN THE FACE
>fucking face is obliterated, I don't think a "Phoenix Down" can fix that

Can you spot the difference? If your game has attacks where enemies sick LITERAL METEORS on you and you're totally fine, MAKE UP A MOVE THAT DIALS IT UP HIGHER SO THAT CHARACTER'S DEATH IS ACTUALLY PLAUSIBLE WITHIN THE GAME'S RULES.
