It sounds good on paper.

Until a pseudo-legendary is pushing your pikachu's shit in so hard that it chokes on its own shit.

Of course if were only talking about completing the story in the games, then yes, you can generally get away with using whatever you want because the cpu ai is shit in 99.9% of fights.

Still, I'm no competitive player but I'm smart enough to recognize that some Pokemon are simply too shit to bother using. I guess I'm lucky in that most of my favorites are Pokemon like Shuckle, Snorlax and the like - Pokemon that have pretty clear uses and not-completely-shit stats, but also look and act based as fuck. I can only imagine how it'd feel to be, say, an Unown/Sunflora/Dedenne fanboy

Karen's my favorite of the Gen 2 Elite Four, but she's fucking wrong.
I know she's trying to deliver a message against what Silver was spouting the whole game, but it's not a good message how it's done here.
Really, you should really enjoy your favorites and not feel bad that they're not the greatest, but if you want to win, you'll need Pokemon that can win.

As an example, I fucking love Pidgeot, but I'd never put it on my team to actually battle people with, that'd be retarded.
>>
>>337651586

And my favorites happen to be the strongest Pokemon.

Just kidding this guy is my favorite Pokemon.
>>
From a singleplayer perspective, definitely. The game is made where you can basically just win using only your starter if you want. I've never forced myself to use a pokemon I didn't like, and it's always more fun that way to beat the game.

Fighting other, real people though? Nah, people have that shit down to a science. Using your favorites won't get you anywhere.

They also eat "Pokemon food" which is some sort of kibble or dog food, made out of... something, I guess?

This franchise has a lot of potential and always has, but it's so badly wasted in Nintendo's hands. Give it to a company that can make it into an actual RPG for once.

It's a children's franchise. It doesn't need to be any more than that.

Besides, it has more in-depth gameplay than even some more "mature" RPGs, like SMT. Also, "real RPGs" tend to have almost no applicability for PvP.
>>
>>337653073
I'm still bothered that there's no other PvP focused turn based RPGs than Pokemon.

>It's a children's franchise.

This isn't an excuse! Plenty of kids enjoyed Chrono Trigger and it was a great RPG. Plenty of kids enjoyed FF7 and FF10 as kids and they're good RPGs. Saying something is a "children's game" isn't an excuse!

>Also, "real RPGs" tend to have almost no applicability for PvP.

You don't need to get rid of the idea of collecting all the monsters in the game so you can trade them and battle with them. You just need to make a better game.
>>
>>337640445
She is partially right, in that you can get by pretty well with most Pokemon. However, if you want to really excel in the game, like World Championship crap, then no. You ill have to have a basic cookie-cutter team with maybe one or two unique ones that have a specific purpose.

Anyone have that image of the World Championship team winners by year?
>>
>>337653190
Probably because Pokemon's the only one that's actually capable of it.

There are several ingredients for decent-to-good PvP:
1. Trial and error. Most PvP games go through multiple version updates, just look at any fighting game. RPGs, however, aren't very conducive to that sort of thing, and few companies are willing to refine their RPG over several iterations. Look at any RPG series and you'll find that the developers would prefer to do something drastically different or otherwise utterly game-changing for subsequent sequels. Pokemon, however, has remains steadfast in being the same thing only more refined with each generation. Some players see this is bland, and often clamor for something very different, but that would mean starting over from scratch and going through a decades-long refinement process all over again.
2. Variable strategies. Look at most RPGs and you'll often find more often than not that there are only a few viable strategies for most battles. Even games that feature mons like SMT or Digimon Story are the same. This is because Pokemon has a unique system where every element has a different attribute with over six hundred mons offering an insane amount of variety to choose from. This allows for countless adoptable strategies. Even if certain strategies are better than others, as Smogonfags will no doubt rub in your face, the fact is, even within that smaller pool, there are still more variable strategies than any other RPG.

>>337653653
So you want them to ditch everything they've done until now and create a new game from scratch that will almost certainly be shit because it's gone through no significant playtesting or refinement? Again, look at any other PvP game. All of them went through years and years of refinement to get to where they are. The first Street Fighter? Shit. The first Guilty Gear? Worthless. The first Pokemon? Where's that image that details all of its major design flaws?

It's just funny to me because the actual Pokémon TCG is fucking hilariously bad, the only competitive scene for it is for turbo spergs. No sense of balance at all, it's just balls-to-the-wall power creep, except the creep is more like a breakneck sprint
