I enjoyed X when I first played it but going back changed my opinion. The "pilgrimage" is a convenient excuse for a another straight-line adventure. The sphere grid loses meaning when you obtain teleport spheres and members like Kimahri are only there to unlock the path to ultima. Missing Al Bhed primers is infuriating. Yuna is a better end-game black mage than Lulu.
Blitzball was an alright minigame but also falls apart if you don't reset it before it gets too silly at higher character levels.

I know that Quina and Amarant dont have much development but what they are meant to be and to do is done succesfully.
And the rest of the cast has an amazing character development with Steiner and Vivi being one of the best examples in the series of character development.
And the game is definitely not mediocre, it has one of the best OST, great world and characters and the story is good too.

I'll agree on a lot of points here, and I find characters to have their place in combat for the most part so none of them gets dumped in favor of a constant party of the same characters. But the game's one weakness I feel is the slow-ass combat speed. It absolutely broke any interest in replaying the game on console back when I owned a physical copy. I recently emulated it with speed-up available, and it basically saves the game for me at this point, good thing speedup is included for the steam release.

Steiner's is great, Vivi's arc ends abruptly and his entire character shifts over to Zidane. Zidane's and Vivi's existential crisis is the exact same story. Which is lazy writing. Not to mention, Zidane is completely ripped from Terra's story from VI.
X's character development is much better than IX's. Tidus's development is more developed and better told than Zidane's. Of the leading role, Zidane's character development is only better than WoL, Furion, WoL, and Bartz.
And all three of the four are the exact same character. Furthermore, Bartz does the comedy better than Zidane.

I haven't played IX, but I have played X. And having watched some playthroughs of IX, I have to say the story of X is much stronger.
It deals with things far more deeper than your average jrpg, such as the nature of faith, death, natural disasters and their effects on the world, the question of technology etc.
It really is the best Final Fantasy story wise, it's edgy while at the same time it's not whiny or angsty as may other jrpgs are, and as a result it's a much more mature narrative.
gameplay wise, it's nothing special though at the time I played it, it's graphics seemed amazing to me.
