I'll give you crouch jumping, that's always just been an annoying mechanic in Source games that isn't really necessary. But air strafing is a huge skill based mechanic, it's a skill that helps you fight explosives characters. A medic in TF2 who is skilled at air strafing can strafe a rocket blast all the way to safety. A skilled Mercy literally can't do that because it's not a mechanic.
