The "hassle" of assembling a PC isn't one. Takes longer to unpack the parts than to put them together.
The real hassle is installing win7 on a modern pc.
That said, consoles did turn less convenient. They're not down to PC levels, but they're getting closer.
I've never really bothered with bundles so everything in the "games not played" pile is shit I do intend to play eventually.

If I don't spend more than that at the end of the day, I consider it a good deal. Which makes movies generally a terrible deal, which is why people pirate.
Steam usually ends up being a very good deal, even with the cost of the rig factored in.
I only rebuild my PC every 7 or 8 years though, that's a console generation and a half. I could just replace the GPU at the 5 year point and then do a rebuild every 10 years, but I prefer to just get it all done at once.

$800+ is probably more "normal", $500 is kinda in budget range. But a PC can last twice as long as a console gen so it balances out. I usually aim for around that amount when I build my PC, and when I decide it's time to upgrade it still runs new games better than current consoles.
$1000 or more is where you start approaching overkill territory.

Around here people would have you think a GTX 970 is the standard GPU for gaming PC, but you get out and talk to people and you'll realize that GPU is considered extremely boss and things like the 980 ti are about as popular as owning a Neo Geo was in the 90s. Very, very small number of users.
