my only access to pc games is through this pic related laptop i got for my graduation gift years ago, yes, i am a homosexual

i always get this feeling that my laptop will overheat and burn out really early if i play games on it. when i play lets say skyrim on the max amount of graphics it can handle for 60fps, my laptop just makes a really loud noise the whole time and it does get heated. so it puts me off. should i just get a desktop?
>>
>>337558373
No, you should get a ps4
>>
>>337558468
i have a ps4
>>
>>337558621
get another.
>>
>>337559905
should i use the laptop for games or will it overheat and die
>>
>>337559990
I recommend you tape the two PS4s together for double the graphics.
>>
>>337560110
i have a wii u too should i tape that
>>
It's designed to heat up, that's why it has fans all over it. Just play games on it.
>>
>>337560305
no, throw it in the bin.
>>
>>337560305
I don't know. Nintendo's kind of shoddy.
>>
>>337558373
That's what happens when you cram so many heat generating components in such a small space. Make you sure you blow it out regularly and keep the exhaust vents clear for the fans to do their work, if necessary take it apart just enough so you can get at the fans to keep them clean.
>>
>>337558373
>should i just get a desktop?
Yes.
Meanwhile, clean up your laptop's vents, and maybe apply new thermal paste on CPU & GPU

Skyrim was never a demanding game.

Which model is that? Need some model numbers so we can estimate how much it would sell for, used.

Get a decent gaming desktop and stick to using cheapo normal laptop for work and shit.

it is the m14xr2. i've had it for 3-4 years i think. the battery is dead so it has to stay on the charger now. i was just using skyrim as an example. i can't find this model in the store anymore

Build a PC, about $1200 should do
Google Logical Increments for parts
>>
>>337561585
>Build a PC, about $1200 should do
More like 500$. That already gets you 1080p/60fps capable system.

There's no reason to go over 1000 bucks.
>>
>>337558373
I used to play games on a 2006 Macbook Pro that would heat up to 105C and it never died, so you should be okay. Advisable to build a PC though.
>>
>>337558373
>should i just get a desktop
Yes, if you aren't on the move most of the time, desktop is the way to go.
>>
>>337562027
>More like 500$
Liar. Unless your dollar symbol being in the wrong spot indicates you're from some magical country where money is worth twice as much as it is in America.
>>
>>337561427

> Alienware shit
> expensive as fuck
> not even a 'true' quad core mobile i5 and it has a gt 650m instead of the 'true' gaming grade gtx 660m - 680m

a $600 i5u + gt 940m would beat the shit out your laptop

a $600 desktop rig would be more than twice powerful than the two laptop combined

No, I'm serious.
You could already create a decent entry-level system for HALF of that.

There's been very little change in system requirements in the past 6 years. Hell, I'm still running my 5yo i5 2500 + 8GB DDR3 + GTX 560ti 1GB, playing everything at 1920x1200, no problems.

Clean your shit.

And yes, get a fucking desktop.
>>
>>337562320
shut up nigga before i bitch slap your ass
>>
>>337558373
Just get an external USB fan and you'll be fine.
>>
>>337558373
Wait for new Nvidias. Price down and choices will come. Meanwhile play on your laptop with Speccy. Try to not go over 70C over the summer.
>>
>>337562492

Try and sell it used for $250-300

Build at least a $500+ rig
Skylake i3 & an R9 380 would do fine at 1080p
> High 60fps+, Ultra 40fps+

Or wait a month for the new R9 480 instead, and get the i5 6500 instead. This would cost you around $600.

If you need another laptop, get a cheap $400+ laptop for work.

If you want something that is cheap yet capable of running some easy games, a $600 laptop is what you need.
> Core i5u
> Nvidia GT 940m

whats wrong with my specs? selling it for that much is too low.

Would I benefit from a 940M? I know there's a few GPUs I can up to but they don't really add much as far as I know. Specially since I have this weird glitch where some programs refuse to run of my GPU.
>>
>>337563231

because muh Alienware, right?

Dude, people are selling off their 'muh normie' laptop with the same i5 and even i7's with gt 640m / 650m no more than $350, used.
>>
>>337558373
does it run crysis
>>
>>337563571

no, yours is the real deal, gaming laptop

that mate is a proper quad-core mobile i7, the MQs

and the 780m is still plenty powerful for a laptop GPU

the 940m is only as fast as the older gtx 660m / gt 750m
>>
>>337563804
i don't care about memes. i'm just afraid it was going to die earlier if i played games on it heavily. there is no way im selling it for that much
>>
>>337564006
Oh okay good. I can still 50-60+ fps some newer releases but it doesn't hurt to know if i can do better. Just wish I knew why my damn Nvidia refuses to be seen by some apps.
>>
>>337558373
Since nobody actually asnwered your question about overheating:
Get some app that shows your system temperatures while you're gaming. If the temps are below 90C, you're fine. Laptops, especially gaming laptops, are designed to tolerate really high temperatures. The fans might be loud, but unless it's breaking 90, you're fine.
>>
>>337564373
thank you
>>
>>337563231

There's nothing wrong with it except maybe the fact that it was expensive.

Generally, laptops are twice as expensive as an equivalent performance desktop.

That said, desktop is twice as powerful for half the price of the laptop.

Those 'gaming' labels makes it even more expensive.

Generally a proper, 'true' gaming grade laptops have at least a GTX x60m on it, all the way up to an x80m.

They have a 'semi'-grade 'gaming' laptop, which is fitted with at least an x50m or an x55m. (GT 750m, 755m for example)

You won't find a GTX x60m - x80m on normal laptop, the highest you'd find is a GT x50 / x55m.

shit tier
> x10m / x20m / x30m (GT 610m etc)

normal tier (the bare minimum to play something decent)
> x40m / x50m / x55m (640m etc)

'gaming grade'
> x60m - x80m (GTX)

yes they do age, a normal GT 940m is already close to the 'gayming' GTX 660m

Like >>337564373 said. Mine hovers around 75-83C depending on what game I'm playing. Another thing you can do is limit frames so that it's not using more power than what's needed. Those 10-30 extra frames are probably not gonna be noticed by you may want to lock it to 60 (45 if you can't do).
>>
While yes a desktop is a lot better for several reasons don't worry about it.
So long as you're not doing anything crazy it's fine they go through stress tests for his kinda shit and a consoles is "powerful equipment in a small space" as well.
I'm not saying go crazy and play games on ultra in a car in the middle of summer while you play 4K videos on it for 24 hours just play in moderation if it feels hot, give it a little rest until it cools down.
>>
>>337558373
I've had a m17xr4 for about 4 years now, graphics card 9790m died just before the warranty expired and the guy offered to replace everything except the hard drive so it's probably good for another year at least.

If I didn't move around so much i would built a desktop but since i do laptop was the only solution.

I've been impressed with it, handled everything I've bought on 1080p at 60fps and has definitely been worth the initial £2000. FC4 was the first title that i had to turn off the AA to maintain a silly smooth 60.

IMO for laptops AW is pretty good.
>>
>>337564215

yeah, the mobile 780m was last gen powerhouse

it's equivalent to a DESKTOP GTX 660Ti / 760 or the R7 270x, or the newer GTX 950 / R7 370
