OP I'm assuming when it comes to RPG's you're talking more about the dialog side of things & not the stat/skill growth? In which case I suggest Pathologic HD, not an RPG but a mostly dialog & action (as in the actions you take, not fighting action) driven game.
If it's more about stat growth I suggest Legends of Grimrock (2 is apparently superior to 1 in all ways but they're both pretty great), it's a Wizardry-style RPG, complete with square movement, but in real-time.
