Gaunts' Ghosts is always fun but there has always been the problem that it could be a generic sci-fi setting until A CHAOS SPACE MARINE, OH THAT MAN'S SKELETON BECAME A DAEMON.Also, don't get attached to anything.
The Grey Knight books were ok, Alaric had an ok career.
Ciaphas Cain... HERO OF THE IMPERIUM if you want the perspective of the 40k universe that isn't full one sided. Also, it's hilarious. That's not to say it doesn't have its own problems, you'll notice one right away.

The Dark Eldar series is pretty good. And Titanicus is a good read. Space wolves has its amusing moments, and salamanders was good especially with them trying to be good and all the other chapters being arrogant cuntlords and their astounding restraint from slaughtering them. Ravenor and Eisenhorn are good for inquisition shenanigans. Horus Heresy series is hit and miss, the Dark apostle series is pretty good and manages to not be edgy crap.

However, the game is coded with modding in mind, .ini everywhere, and the devs and GW agreed on making the game moddable to hell and back apparently.
So it could happen, and probably will, considering how nerdy and dedicated the fanbase is.

Thing is, the gameplay itself is agfected by the fact that you're a walking tank.
Suddenly becoming a superfast marine or a standard human would mean a complete overhaul of walking, shooting, HUD, interacting, damages. Litteraly everything affecting you would be changed.
And most importantly, it would become "Instant death: the game" as genestealers just don't fuck around.
