quake single player has absolutely nothing going for it. Doom at least is fast-paced and a legendary single-player game.

Doom 1/2, then the Scythe 2 wad to enjoy Doom 2's additional weapons and enemies fully without mediocre levels bogging down the experience. Then play Quake. Quake is a good game and all, and the level design's incredible, but it's held back by a really low enemy count (which are tanky as hell), truly unsatisfying guns and some really awkward enemy attacks. Still worth playing though. After that play Blood for the peak of old school FPS.
quake 1 has one of my favorite visual aesthetics in anything ever
i'd still start with doom though, if only for the sake of logical progression
