Doom 64 EX is actually closer to the original game.

Doom 64 was one of the best FPS games on the N64. I'm glad they made something completely new rather than just making a direct port of the original.
>>

quake did it better
>>
dOOm PSX was also a neat spin on original dOOm with it's change in music and lighting. Same guy later did the soundtrack for dOOm 64 and the fan PC port is also not half bad.

I wanted to love this game.

It's too dark, even with the game and TV brightness jacked up, and I felt that the puzzles were just too obtuse. The double-barrel feels great though.

The default setup is gigashit, much like the PC games, but blessedly whoever made it had the foresight to include a bindings menu. With a little fiddling it quickly becomes quite playable. It's not as responsive as mouselook obviously but playing it old-style does add an extra layer of challenge, especially with the souped-up demons 64 features.
>>
im literally going to sleep with this playing
>>
>>337525324
Back in the days, I found it just alright.
Tried it a few years ago again, and it felt quite awkward, BUT luckily you could use / make a Turok-style control scheme that helps a lot, being probably the closest thing to WASD + M consoles have ever provided.

Overall, though, the game's slightly optimized for the gamepad, as in you seldom get dozens of enemies on screen at once like in PC Dooms.

Unmaker best gun. It's fucking criminal they've ignored this beast ever since, especially since it's in the production bible for the original so whoever's making D44M should be aware of it. A weapon that evolves by finding secret stages? C'mon that's brilliant.

It's kind of fun though, Doom 64's brief textscroll interludes depict Doomguy going from the resigned soldier he was in Doom 1 and 2 to something much closer to the bloodthirsty demonfucker depicted in D44M. The latter might be a shit game, but it's pretty awesome that this particular forgotten gem ties the series together.

The fucking ending

>After going through Doom 1 and 2 again times a hundred he finds the Mother of All Demons and beats the everliving shit out of her
>Instead of going back to the life he thought he wanted, he finds purpose in hell and decides to stay to make sure no more demons ever show up

64 does have a bunch of optional puzzles you can permanently fail, and it's extremely fond of inescapable lava pits, which is one of the few areas i seriously fault it. Modern wad design frowns on both, and without mid-level save states the consequences are pretty dire. It's not a game to be played without the memory pak if you want to get the Unmaker to full power, certainly.

There's a lot of shit in this game that can throw a veteran Doom player. I spent a good 10 minutes walking in circles on one of the early maps because I hadn't realized this game was capable of room over room architecture. Completely destroyed my sense of direction. And nobody likes Pain Elementals at the best of times but jesus fuck they are beyond brutal in 64.

Plus it seems like some levels have monster infighting disabled. I'm going through 16 right now and all my best efforts havent resulted in a single infight despite a cacodemon getting hit with a dozen imp fireballs. Odd.

Yeah, they attack like fastmonsters is enabled regardless of difficulty. Just one of them can completely facefuck you in seconds if not responded to, and the Pain Elementals in Doom 64 shoot TWO Souls at a goddamn time. It's always been my policy to break out the BFG for meatball daemons but in Doom 64 it's almost a necessity.

The console versions of doom went full ambience since they couldn't keep up with the PC's upbeat. The result created the kind of space opera setting we cherished in the novels. The only thing left to explore would be the hyper realism the novels created. However I feel like such a doom game would be more akin to stalker + Darksouls. Doom guy visiting places on mars and the moons repeatedly all the while finding pieces of different teleporters, relics and machinery. Visiting his friends whom have barricaded themselves in secure locations, doom guy would force elevators into emergency stop mid shaft and sleep, have to sit down and apply medical first aid all the while raging at being his personal surgeon. Modify, Load and take care of his weapons, maybe even see the benevolent sig cow rifle the marines got.

This is just BS. The trap in the freaking LAST ROOM of Blood Keep is a huge dick move though. 64 doesn't even have that many lava pits period, so I don't know where you're getting this from. I pistol started all the levels and thought it was a nice balanced challenge with only a handful of dick traps here and there.

The room with the Megaarmor that collapses into a lava pit when you approach on Dark Citadel instantly comes to mind. The puzzle that leads to the Megaarmor on the first secret map is also possible to permanently fail, if I recall correctly.

Maybe "extremely fond" is overstating it but it uses inescapable death traps more than Doom 1 does.

I actually really liked that about the opening

the implication that the d44m marine is actually the same guy from the originals is a neat twist, and explains the over-aggression he shows against everything

>get your suit
>start looking at the monitor to fogure out how the demons came back and why you were woken up
>suddenly a voice comm from the founder of the UAC starts talking about "mutual agreements" and "your best interest" to team up with him
>doomguy obviously ignores him and then throws the monitor to the wall when he is ready to move on

it's nice to see him with a personality, without them forcing player dialogue; and his personality is "for fuck sake, why can't people stop summoning demons? I wanna go back to sleep, time to rip and tear until I can"
