More than anything its boring. Story is a mass, there's no sense of agency to anything you do and the world you're playing in is very blizzard-y but still about as exciting as a saltene cracker.

In the beginning? Auction house, incredibly shitty itemization, barely any replayability. It's a totally different game now though, and fun and addictive for short but intense bursts every new season.

I got a friend who worked at Team 3 at Blizzard, from what he has told me
Around 2010 they pushed for a Console release & started redesigning the game around the philosophy of something like "seamless drop in & drop out co-op"
Skill trees, Traits & Charms/Talisman were quickly dropped because they didn't work well with the new local co-op focused design
When they finalized the UI for Consoles & had it up & running they cut all Potions except Health along with Skill Runes because of inventory management issues with the Console UI
PC version also had Xbox 360 Controller support & local offline co-op for a while but they cut it out of the blue one day, my friend thinks they wanted PC players to have the incentive to also purchase the Console version
Not gameplay related by the story was changed a lot, Westmarch was suppose to be Act 1 but they wanted to go back to Tristram again to be a throwback to Diablo 1, Deckard Cain & Tyrael were not in the game at all in one stage, Leah wasn't suppose to turn into Diablo but just be a replacement for Deckard Cain

I've recently played "through the game" (as much as it's possible atm). And the game itself is actually pretty fun. The animations are super smooth, the grind is nice etc. But progression is completely fucked up.
It's 99% items and basically you can get to Torment 5-7 within a very short period of time, but to get to the "end game" you have to get perfect rolls on all of your shit and it's super fucking tedious. You don't hunt for items, but you hunt for good rolls on the items. It doesn't feel rewarding at all.
PoE is superior in almost every way.

Even worse, there is no end game. It's literally trying to get perfect rolls on an item so you can do a greater rift 2 numbers higher. Even though the enemy roulette in grifts is much more important than 5% damage you get from having +20% fire skills instead of +15%.

I think the game is pretty good now, I'd much rather play it than Diablo 2.That being said, the latest patch sucked, and cold damage builds still are not viable at all for any class.

Also the majority of the time was spend in the original game. I liked it better when it had an economy. I made like 100 paragon levels the last time I played for a couple of hours so they most likely just reduced the EXP needed across the board.
