Does HeXen have something like the BFG? Some really powerful end-game weapon? I found the Heretic arsenal fun and all, but it sort of peters out towards the end. Even the Phoenix staff is sort of meh, since the game doesn't really have a lot of low-hp enemies clustered together. I mostly use it to deal with bigger threats (like the Iron Liches).

Each of the classes/characters has a sort of "ultimate" weapon that you assemble by getting 3 pieces throughout the game.

Each character has his unique superweapon you need to assemble. Fighter has a sword which shoots few green projectiles. Mage has a wand which fires 3 homing projectiles which pierce enemies. Cleric has a fucking demonic cross which shoots homing and noclipping ghosts and those ghosts rip enemies apart; it clears whole areas in seconds.

Remember that it's quite different than Doom, with its hub levels and obscure puzzles that don't make any sense. Sometimes you'll have to go twice through a corridor to reveal a hidden staircase. Other time you'll have to fall down into a cave to open all secret but mandatory passages. Also, don't be afraid to use items.

Yeah, Wendigos are fucking relentless. Also you'll be fucked if you start on nightmare as anyone other than Mage. 2nd tier weapons don't spawn in the first hub on highest difficulty so you have to fight Wendigos with your fists. On ice. And they can 1hko.

Yes, his 2nd weapon can heal you when used in melee range. Has the strongest final weapon, 3rd weapon is kinda meh. Also, lacks the range and piercing ability of Mage's starting weaponbut mage is easy mode anyway

Both are great, but I am a hexen man.
I played both as a kid, but hexen really stood out. I think it was the first game to have rotating 3d obstacles which is pretty damn cool

Bought the id pack on Steam during some Quakecon sale years ago. I have everything they've done up until, and including, Rage. I think Heretic and HeXen (1 and 2) was part of that pack? They weren't developed by id, but they're in my library, and I don't remember buying them.

Looking back on that, it gave me a good chuckle with "other." My young mind didn't think progressive reasons for it. I felt they just put it in to mean demon or alien.

HeXen has some confusing shit going on. "One of three unlocked" or whatever. But at least I found the second weapon. Are there really only four per class? Seems a bit low.
I still need to beat Hexen II one of these days.

Basically you press buttons and stuff unlocks in other levels. 4 weapons, some act differently in melee range (or at least the serpent staff and ice shard does). Also the Fléchette works differently for each character.
Then there's stuff like porkalator, which turns enemies into pigs and disc of repulsion, which bounces projectiles and enemies back.

Yeah, the gas bomb is pretty effective, but not that fun to use. That goes for the serpent staff as well, to be honest. Heretic got pretty imaginative with the weapons, especially during tomb of power use, so I'm a little bit disappointed. Was hoping for something more.

I wish I could get a version of Hexen without all the bullshit puzzles, because Hexen's weapons and spells are more fun than Heretic's Doom reskins.

You can always generate an episode with Oblige, but it'll lack the level design of the original.
I can also recommend Wrath of Cronos combined with Hexercise, it adds rpg-like leveling system, skills, alt fire modes for weapons and two new classes (necromancer and hunter). It's a completely different experience than vanilla Hexen.
