Should I save them for the DLC? I doubt people can just trade this items to others, right?

Save at least 2 of them for DLC weapons. Dark souls 2 DLC weapons were notoriously crazy good.

You can't trade upgrade materials. There are a maximum of eight slabs in any single game cycle.

Just make a new character or power through a new game cycle if you run out. Eight is plenty for anything other than a retarded "try every weapon in the game" quality build.

I don't think you really need to save them. Artorias of the Abyss and the Old Hunters DLCs added Slabs/Rocks in the new areas. I'm sure FROM will do the same for DaSIII's DLC.

Just farm one. Buy a hundred undead hunter charms, find a mimic you haven't killed. Throw charm, pick up hat if it drops. If it doesn't, quit/reload and try again.
