Those who mention social expectations are actually right. Even the choices kids make when playing with toys are influenced by social expectations.
The fact videogames are typically (but not always) designed to appeal males also plays a role.
What started the whole sterotype that "videogames are for males", I really have no idea, maybe the fact computers and technology have always been seen as things for me.

i have two teenaged daughters. I have played video games my entire life and I tried to play video games with them constantly growing up. The were completely disinterested in anything except shit like Just Dance and various shitty singing games. Nothing I did got them interested in video games. They grew up to be varsity athletes in track and volleyball and all they like to do for hobbies is shop and take selfies. They make fun of people like me at their school.
