Sure but it makes things A LOT simpler when the actor and character have similar facial structure :-)

Also why would the company that did the trailer go through all the trouble of modeling a space marine face by hand and animate it by hand? It's obviously performance capture, nevermind that brain damaged weeaboos don't even know what actual humans look like.

What kind of middleware do you use? It's come a long way since 2010, the process has been significantly streamlined.

indeed, but the work for that trailer is super easy by hand, and you don't need to hire a mo-cap actor and go to the mocap studio, all is done by the animator, chilling in his chair, not breaking a sweat.

sure, doing loads of unit animations are better with mo-cap, as you'll only capture rough body animations and not facial animation, and the quality doesn't have to be very high. the cinematics probably will be hand animated
