The biggest thing I can think of is either give him one more favorable trade if you can and/or the biggest thing right now would be to try and improve your military power. If you manage to become equal that still would leave you at just -1, so I'm not really sure what else you could do.

Keep researching. You get a tech called 'Forced Conduit' or something which adds another 50 years for your leader. Makes your population a little unhappy though.

My faction ruler is 310, but that's with the resilient perk for +25, conduit for +50, tree of life for +10, and at least four +5 leader lifespan repeatable techs.

Hopefully he doesn't die anytime soon.

I had my science ships sitting with the fleet just to keep up with all the debris being dropped, they literally let me skip two tech levels of research with the material I got.

My only gripe. I mean, the usual 4X options are mostly there, but on the whole diplomacy just feels so passive. Nothing happens unless you actively go looking for it.
