Yes and no. Party members die in FF games all the time, but not quite in the same way that Aeris did.
Josef, Mimwu, and Ricard all died, but it was clear that they were temporary party members. The party in that game was Firion, Rosa, Guy, and a filler member.
Everyone died in IV but then they all come back so it's okay. Also that game had a rotating cast you couldn't control, a character dying was the same as a character leaving the party.
Galuf died, but Krille gets all his skills.
Leo died, but it was clear he was also temporary, you couldn't change his equipment.
Aeris was a distinct character. You had no real reason to expect she was going to die. She was an available party member most of the game, and you never get a replacement. Her death was different than the others and more impactful from a gameplay standpoint.
Cloud being a beta was a great twist, but it doesn't seem to have stuck. Most people seem to think Cloud was a badass, but him being a beta fuck (and a clear representation of the player) was a big part of the game. FFVII has a lot of pretty interesting ideas that it seems like everyone just ignores.
