What I'm more concerned with is the energy efficiency pyramid. Even in an ideal system of 100% energy conversion, wouldn't the act of healing that much tissue require just as much energy from food sources?

Made perfect sense they are constantly talking about equal in and out and are constantly wondering about how to get enough energy to make the philosopher stone. They are then told the only way to generate enough power is to use live humans. Did you not immediately wander about how all minor alchemy was powered? Then they hint at the gate being some kind of exchange in the first episode. Its the very reason i like the first one more alchemy was wayyy more fleshed out as was the homunculi

This goes deepand into depressing territory.

If you consider that there are time periods of your life that you have no memory of, isn't the "you" from that time period basically dead? And the current "you" being an entirely different person?

How long until the current "you" dies in the same way?

Definitely agree with you there. I watched the proper adaptation last year, and though thefight scenes were a little better and some of the characterisation was neat, it certainly didn't feel the same. Also Father was a really shit big bad compared to Dante.

Valkyrie Profile has debuffs working on nearly eveyrthing.

The Nep games actually have many bosses not immune to debuffs. A shame that the EX moves trivialize the game anyways. Not using them actually makes you very reliant on debuffs and status conditions.

They both have very good strengths but when i watch movies and shows world building means way more to me than anything else which is why I enjoy the Prequels in star wars. Acting, character development, and a forced plot might be terrible not to mention very slow and a lot of politics but to me that is the best because if you create a pretty function that isnt always true it can only be good for 1 equation but if you make an ugly function that is always true then you can compute infinite equations.
>>
>>337334990
that's a poor comparison to scientists growing cultured meat
>>
>>337337716
Pretty sure it does, the main reason we get old and senile is mostly because of prions making cell renewal harder and DNA strands getting full of errors over billions of billions of transcriptions during our lives.
>>
>>337337923
But anybody can see when a technology is getting more advanced. You find it involving more and more equations to compute its processes so in a way it is effecting the fabric of reality more than a spoon lifting soup to your lips. Technology does have power.
>>
>>337337702
I find it baffling that people find this scary.
There is only ever the current "you" anyway and any aspects of yourself that would transcend the now only exist in your mind anyways.
I guess it's a "you are actually smaller than you think you are" kind of thing and it also reminds people of the unstoppable passage of time and the final conclusion of ones life to come.
>>
>>337337923
The idea was that ordered systems inherently disrupt the primal energies of magic, whilst the presence of magical apparatus and entities disrupts the consistency of natural forces. Light and sound move at variable rates, friction oscillates unpredictably etc, so machines don't work around magic, but magic doesn't respond well to the order of machines.
>>
>>337337923
That's the point.

Technology is abiding to the rules of nature and physics.
Magic is breaking them.

Those 2 are at constant war with each other and are mutually exclusive. A very advanced machinery abides to these rules so hard that its very presence makes it impossible to break those rules, unless the wizard in question is able to break them so hard the machinery can't compete and malfunctions.

It was out of the blue because it HAD to be.

Once they caught up with the manga, the author came to them, told them how the manga was going to end, and said "don't you fucking dare spoil this ending, you better make something else up".

So they did.

Actually I like the direction the original anime went much better.
>>
>>337337923
In many settings magic is a power that breaks physical laws and thus would certainly have the potential to be diametrically opposed to technology.

Then there are settings where magic is basically the same as technology.

It just depends on the setting.

Fatty cuts need a bit more heat to melt the fat too. If were talking meat that was cut straight from a cow it might be bloodier than butchered meat but you could eat it raw. Raw beef cut into thin strips and dipped in sauce is meant to be pretty tasty.
>>
>>337338205
World of Darkness has a very cool definition of magic.

All the rules of physics etc. are just what the majority of people around believe in. A mage is someone who realizes that and can affect the world around him by challenging the believes of those around him.

Doing greatly unbelieable things will often result in paradox and mke the magic not work/backfire. That's why it was easier to cast fireballs in the Middle Ages for example, because people actually believed it's possible.

Lots of technology was invented because an order of mages has steered humanity into believing in it, too.

Not all cells reproduce. You are stuck with some of the permanent cells until the day you die.

Jesus Christ, why the fuck do people fall for this stupid bullshit

Yes, your skin and nails and large portions of your internal organs lose cells and generate new ones.

YOUR BRAIN DOES NOT. BRAIN CELLS LAST A LIFETIME. DEAD CELLS IN THE CEREBRAL CORTEX NEVER GET REPLACED. YOU ARE YOUR BRAIN.

For fuck's sake

Doesn't apply to my point about memories.

Look, the last memory I have was from when I was about 5 years old.

The <5 years old me didn't have any memories I have know, nor do I have any of his memories.

So, basically, that me is dead. Doesn't exist.

And if I live to the age of 90 or so, I probably won't remember jack shit about this time frame. So current me will be dead as well.

I know it doesn't sound very convincing but give it a thought. Or don't, the more I think of it the worse I feel actually.

>Doesn't apply to my point about memories.
Your "point" about memories is asinine as you've utterly failed to operationally define "you."

>I couldn't form memories before 3 so the three-year-old me is dead
You're just mashing words together and inventing new definitions. That means absolutely nothing.

>you've utterly failed to operationally define "you."
I consider memories and experiences to be the vital component of personality, among others.

>You're just mashing words together and inventing new definitions. That means absolutely nothing.
Well shit, would you be totally ok with losing all of your memories? Would it still be you after that?

I know you'd basically end up killing genetic diversity and promote generations and generations of inbreeding because the rez'd animals are essentially clones, but it'd be a pretty neat month for endangered species everywhere

No such thing dumbass. You're a continuity, not several different chunks spread across in time. Try turning your PC off for several minutes, then start it up again. Is it the same PC with the same software? Yeah. Now try turning your brain off entirely for several minutes, deprive it completely of oxygen and blood during that period of time. Now start pumping blood and oxygen back, are you the same person with the same conscience? No, you're fucking braindead. Your brain cells are gone and can never be recovered.

God I hate it when teenagers with existential crisis shit up /v/.

>I consider memories and experiences to be the vital component of personality
You're still not defining "you" (or person), "personality," or even death in such a way as to make your statement make sense.

I smoke weed erry day, so why are you the one that sounds like a stoner?

>Well shit, would you be totally ok with losing all of your memories?
No, amnesia sucks, but when someone has amnesia I don't consider them fucking dead.

>Would it still be you after that?
That depends on how "you" or "person" is defined, which is fairly arbitrary.

If we were actually debating operational definitions I would argue that personality is in no way tied to memories even if those memories effect the personality. Personality is not knowledge, it is disposition.

If a man who greatly enjoys murder and a man who greatly enjoys helping people were to swap dispositions but not memories, would you say they still had the same personalities?
