in sonic 3/knuckles sonics double jump (shieldless) temporarily expands his attack harmbox to allow him to attack otherwise hazardous enemies. in this case sonic can double jump to attack the logger robot even when the jetpack is in the way.

knuckles will have a much much harder time on this boss because his jump is lower and his doublejump forces a slow and dangerous glide that is nearly useless offensively

Not just you. Many bosses had more aggressive attack patterns with Knuckles (Flying Battery endboss is using the flamethrower nonstop), some of them were straight up different (launch base had 2 of those swinging things simultaneously), and you couldn't use the jump-slash motion that Sonic had (with no shield, jump, press jump in air, you'll do a small slash that extends your attack hitbox - you can hit most bosses nonstop that way without waiting for their attack pattern to end).

Or even better, play Doomsday Zone as Knuckles or Tails. You need to enter/exit Debug Mode before you transform to avoid garbled graphics, but it works perfect otherwise.

Tails looks normal since he kinda sorta looks like he is flying forward anyway, but Knuckles looks funky running through space like that.

In Angel Island act 1 the boss shoots rockets as well as having his regular moveset I think
Act 2 either has no difference, or the fireballs travel along the ground while if you're not Knuckles, they just go straight I think

Hidrocity
Act 1 it's harder to dodge the boss unless you use the wall climbing
Act 2 you can only hit the boss using the water bombs, since he doesn't come down to get the whirpool thing going (if you're not knuckles, he goes down to the water, spins the fan and then starts going up)

Marble Garden
act 1 boss has that spinning spiny platform thing moving around

act 2 is a completely different boss because you don't have Tails helping you fly

Carnival Night
act 1 is the same afaik
act 2 has no boss for whatever reason

I don't remember Ice Cap's bosses well, I think act 1 was the same and maybe act 2 had the platform moving up and down instead of being fixed

The point is that nowhere in the game is up/down used for moment besides here.
There's no cues that would tell the player that it was even an option.
The fact that the barrel moves up and down when jumped on only adds to the confusion as it gives the player the idea that they should be jumping on it to move it.

If it didn't move when jumped on people wouldn't have had a problem with it as they'd eventually have pressed up/down, seen it move, then realize that's the correct way.

It's just bad design.

in some acts the same thing happens, you can break some walls S/T can't, and S/T can go a route you can't because they jump higher and the walls around the jump can't be used to wall climb/glide/whatever to get there as Knuckles (I remember for sure that Angel Island, Carnival Night and Sandopolis have this happen)

also in Mushroom Hill you break the wall with the wind lever and move forward, while playing as S/T you get sent upwards by Knuckles activating the lever
