Why would you even grind that early on in the game?
Enemies near the end game give you like 20+ AP per battle.

I loved A2 a lot, a gem overlooked by many.
One thing I didn't like about Advance 1 was how so many things were missable, namely the drops from the map creation, and those Laws could sometimes really get in the way of your party build.
A2's law system wasn't too punishing. The game was a lot lighter and polished I think. The music is excellent too, it brought back A1 and XII's music as well as its own tracks.

A2 is Advance with a worse plot and removed features. Tactics is phenomenal but doesn't build a connection with your team like Advance does. Tactics and Advance are basically equally good, but the meta aspect of Advances story pushes it on top for me.

I've only played IV, the DS version. Are there any FF games that are a bit more demanding or complex? I liked it well-enough, but I thought it was a bit on the easy/repetitive side. By the end I was a bit tired.

V and Tactics have neat job systems, especially Tactics
II is really customizable and has a unique leveling system, but a lot of people hate it (if you decide to play it, get the psp version)
I wouldn't call any of them demanding though
word of advice, if you're playing an FF with ATB like IV be sure to set it on Active and the highest speed

I agree that A2's main story was weak, but the side stories were a lot more interesting. Cid, Adelle, Frimelda, and the XII characters brings familiarity to that Ivalice. The game kinda feels like watching Cowboy Bebop.
Advance's plot and message were definitely interesting, but the one ending it offers seems pretty narrow-minded. It really only focused on the children's social issues and Cid's unemployment. But Mewt's Ivalice replaced real world corrupt governments and systems with a much simpler monarchy, war and terrorism is replaced by non-fatal competitive battles, degrading natural environments are seemingly non-existent due to the lack of over consumption and production of energy and fossil fuels, and there's also a good chance and exploited oppressed third world nations have become high and rising Clan members in Ivalice, so long as that's what Mewt wished for.
