Megatextures probably aren't in the game, but it's likely that the "almost every asset should be unique" idea has still carried on from previous idtech5 games and that's where a lot of the space is going.

Uncompressed is always going to be higher quality than compressed in some way, but I'm guessing that's less the reason and it's more about them being able to get away with not compressing since speeds and hard drive space aren't as much of an issue this gen as previously and compression could cause noticeable drops in audio quality if handled poorly.

uncompressing shit on the fly takes cpu power, and they'd rather use the cpu on whatever else (since consoles have such low cpu power), so nothing is compressed anymore. and PC gets ports.

A 2TB SSD is about ten times more expensive than a 2TB HDD is and you need a decent amount of space for modern gaming. What the fuck else can you fault SSDs on beyond being expensive for a lot of space? They're undeniably the better technology for data that needs to be stored and retrieved quickly.
