You were correct to begin with. Yours were action RPGs, some Diablo clones are Action RPGs too but Diablo itself is not. No point 'n click game where you give you character commands and hope they follow them correctly is an action RPG. Direct control over your character is a prerequisite.

ARPG stands for action role-playing game, the same now as it has for over 20 years. Any role-playing game that uses real-time combat is an ARPG.
Borderlands is an ARPG. Fallout is an ARPG, especially since 3. Mass Effect is an ARPG, but the KOTOR games aren't really since you use menus. Souls games are ARPGs.
Diablo is a dungeon crawler, which is a sub-genre of ARPG. Diablo-clones are a sub-genre of dungeon crawlers.

after a while... theres just nothing to do. you can grind for 5 hours to get a 5% damage increase, and then open the ability to grind another 3 weeks to increase the item to another 2% damage increase.
