Anyways, I get the feeling that people didn't play this system on old televisions. It was mostly filtered out by old, rubber speakers that could barely produce a bass wave. Now you're playing it on emulators or more modern televisions and the faults become obvious.
They play-tested these games on televisions that were roughly the same age as the consoles. It's extremely subjective to say it's bad when you're mixing outdated and modern technology.

I have a Genesis and a CRT for that sort of thing and I don't notice a problem. Yet when I try to emulate it on my PC with modern speakers it becomes an audio mess. No amount of adjusting will fix it.

It was just a case that if you didn't know how to work around the quirkyness of the soundchip, your game would sound like fart noises. However those that did know, could create some of the finest musical pieces of it's generation, often trumping even some of the best from the SNES.
I consider the situation similar to the PS3. Those didn't didn't put tons of effort into PS3s stupid complicated architecture, would always result in an inferior port. However if effort was put in, you could create some of the nicest looking games of its generation.
Of course nowadays every company does the smart thing and plays it safe in every regard. Though some part of me misses when each console was really unique in many aspects.

SNES = sound font (choose premade sounds, compose song)
MD = real synthesizers (create your own sounds, compose song)
Most OSTs are the MD that sound like ass are lazy ports. Soundtracks developed for the MD blow SNES sound fonts out of the water.
