It's a hurdle you have to get over when you become a "GOOD" JRPG player.
You get to this point. You encounter a difficult foe, you can either take your time and go back and grind until the difficult enemy is easy OR you can use those precious consumables to overcome this enemy. If you're a good player, these moments should happen very often, you should be able to overcome the enemy with strategy.
In some JRPG's grinding is unavoidable, but ideally you don't want to be grinding very often. It's a waste of time. Never neglect the waste of time it is to grind when you could just use an extra healing item. If you do grind, grind efficiently on near end-game enemies that give A LOT of exp.
