System Shock 2 has been sitting in my backlog for a while now and I've been wanting to play it, especially with all the praise that it gets. I don't even mind the outdated graphics (and yes, I know about SSTUP).

I considered playing the first game as well, but after watching some gameplay videos, I thought I couldn't bring myself to play it.

Recently I got gifted System Shock: Enhanced Edition which has more modern control scheme and a bit higher resolution (I'm still playing at 640x480 though) so I though what the heck, I might as well give it a try. So far I'm loving it. The game does absolutely zero hand holding and I can see why such games are no longer made nowadays. Level design is very unintuitive, but managable.

The way I see it, instead of SS2 looking outdated, it will look amazing after having played SS1 prior to it.

What are your thoughts on both?
>>
>>337142693
I love vanilla SS2

what is this SSTUP you speak of...
>>
SS2 is not a dated game. Thats my thoughts on it. Its user interface, with a couple of key bind changes, is blisteringly modern, as is its sound effects, visuals, storytelling and progression.

Dont use the mod packs, they ruin some of the monsters. Looks good as it is.
>>
I think SS2 is one of the most fun, horrifying and enthralling games I've played and I'm a dirty 23 year old who played Bioshock long before ss2.

Graphics dont bother me. Gameplay is tight, even a wrench hybrid is deadly and this is what keeps the game fresh to me.

I think this, STALKER, planescape and new vegas are among the /v/ games that you cannot go wrong with.
>>
>>337142693
I played 2 before 1 but ended up liking 1 more. The strict skill requirements for using various weapons/equipment feels out of place.

Kudos to you for playing both. Honestly SS1 makes SS2 a little harder to push through storywise. But gameplay, it's leaps and bounds above.

Personally, I think they should make more games like SS1 and 2. Simply because it's better than watching a movie where you get to interact with every other open area.
Also, as the progenitor for the 'crazy AI' genre; SHODAN is the single best.
The cyborg midwives look retarded in the graphics overhaul mod
>>
>>337142693
SS2 is the only game that has ever scared me. The atmosphere and enemies are possibly the best ever.
>>
>>337143004
no worries, Ive played bioshock 1 & 2 way before ss2

The game is a masterpiece that doesnt age, like deus ex or super mario bros 3
>>
>>337143328
That's an ancient version of Rebirth
>>
>>337143202
I think shodan is one of my favorites because she has a purpose. All she wants is loyal subjects to refer to her as a god.

AM is still the best evil AI
>>
>>337143545
And there's actually a handful of midwife models to choose from because of how triggered the original Rebirth made people
>>
SS1 is far better than SS2

Also, you can mark and label points of interest in the automap in SS1, it helps a lot.
>>
>>337142925
http://www.shtupmod.net/

It's a texture upgrade pack.

>>337142928
This is something to consider. Thanks for advice.

>>337143004
I also played BioShock (1&2) only recently, but even though they are considered spiritual successors to SS, I don't really see a connection.

I agree about STALKER and NV though. I haven't played P:T past the first hour because I was too young and there was too much to read.

>>337143202
Why do you say that about the story? Without spoilers, if possible.

>>337143328
Wow that new one looks like utter shit. Is this "Rebirth" thing the same as SHTUP? I was under the impression that SHTUP only affects environment textures.

>>337143545
Hm. Original still looks better.

>>337143674
Good to know. Levels can get quite confusing.

Is there a way to check total ammo for weapons like pistol and dartgun? Like, how many magazines of 20 I have in total for pistol?
>>
>>337143674
Such a cool and useful feature. My maps were chock full of password notes, item locations, important doors, etc.

Nah.

ss1 is a kind of dodgy attempt at an adventure fps in the Ultima Underworld engine. It doesnt really work all that well.

SS2 is in instant classic. Its user interface in particular is streets ahead of everything that came after it in terms of "first person game with an inventory". Even the likes of Deus Ex dont pull it off as well.

Body of the Many sucks ass.

Click the Item tab/button in either of the MFDs and click on a weapon in the Main tab in the bottom center display

SS1 is great, and so is 2

stop being a sissy and play them

still has the sexiest robot voice ever tho

You can set nodes on the map even in SS2, but you can't label them.

P-p-p-protip:
Just to relieve some backtracking for later, each time you get to one of the computer node rooms and destroy all of the computers, there should be a black monitor with a red number. Write it down, i'll be useful later, and backtracking from level 7->1 sucks.

I still get lost in the many

They are so good, the level design is top notch. I also really liked the cyberspace levels even though they control weird, I hope they bring them back for SS3 but touch them up a bit.

>>337143876
In regards to the story. System Shock 2 has a very good story about SHODAN, that relies heavily on trusting her. SS1 kinda defeats entering SS2 with that understanding.
>>
>>337145739
That moment when Shodan throws you a party for accidentally destroying Earth

>>337146018
Oy Goy your secret's safe with me
>>
>>337145042
Whoa, I thought they were making a remake, not a sequel? SS3 is actually happening?
>>
>>337146321
They're doing both. Nightdive has proven to be a good company so far.

There is an SS1 remake to bring it up to current standards. And SS3 was announced as a project a subsidiary company (read: works for nightdive but has looking glass members) is working on.
>>
>>337146564
Well I'm carefully looking forward to both then.
>>
>>337146235
>SS1 kinda defeats entering SS2 with that understanding.

Does it? Actual spoilers here You don't actually find out SHODAN has been helping you until a while into the game and when she reveals herself you are supposed to realize that she isn't someone you can completely trust. You only trust her because you have no other choice.
>>
>>337146321
>>337146564
beat me to it lol

OtherSide Entertainment are the guys who are going to make SS3, Warren Spector (Deus Ex, SS1) and Ken Levine (Main director, SS2) are both part of that studio now and are currently working on Underworld Ascendant (true sequal to Ultima Underworld 2) and are set to get onto SS3 next
>>
>>337146940
Ken Levine actually isn't on SS3, or at least I can't find anything that says he is working on SS3, only stuff that says he isn't.
>>
>>337142693
SS2 is absolutely the best sci-fi game available on any system
>>
>>337147287
>>337146940
shit i said Ken Levine i meant Paul Neurath the founder of looking glass. i wouldnt really want levine on the project desu considering what he did with bioshock

I'd honestly say it's still very easy to jump the gun on that conclusion. Given the content of SS1.
