Sakura is obtained with bond points (just having her in your party while you fight stuff), Gemini is by completing some quests that tend to be relatively easy, while Erika is from exchanging drops you get from those quests. Sakura and Gemini should be easy, but Erika might be a little tough/grindy for someone just starting out.

The 3rd game was developed by the team who made Valkyria Chronicles later down the line. Before that the battle system was grid-based like an oridnary SRPG.
But the characters are really charming, the music is fantastic and the whole world really feels alive since they keep building on events or locations from earlier titles.
If you know japanese and want the VC gameplay, there is also a remake of the first title which uses the new system found in 3 and up.
Otherwise 5 is available in english, I highly recommend that since it and 2 are my favorites in the series.
