If anything there's more people. When the game was new, I'd have time to play the jump minigame. Now it matches so quick I need to stop playing if I gotta pee or get a glass of water.
It feels like 60-70% Japanese players, but during the Spongebob splatfest (us EU only) matches still went quick

Japs are also kind of addicted to the game and can be tough.
