I figure any character powerful enough to link the fire is roughly equivalent at their prime. The whole point of a Lord of Cinder is they gather up as many souls as they can so they'll burn longer when linking the First Flame, so you can assume that almost anyone who linked the flame, or "could" have linked the flame, was at least as powerful as a fully-statted, fully-geared, end-game player character.

Actually exactly the opposite. Except for Straight Sword and Estoc R1 spam, heavy weapons are greatly preferred in PvP because many of them have Hyper Armor.
In PvE, as always, anything works if you want to make it work, but I have the easiest time with any of the Straight Swords and smaller Greatswords, especially the Claymore and the rarer Flamberge--which is actually good now--and the Hollowslayer Greatsword, which is a basically a Claymore for Dex builds, and it also deals 50%(!) to hollow-type enemies, making the early game stupidly easy.
Besides that, Bleed is back and better than ever, so if you've got good reactions just pick Thief and roll over the game with the starting Bandit Knife.

Well, actually, the Queen of Lothric did mysteriously disappear, so it's possible Gwynevere was captured by the Cathedral of the Deep and transformed into Rosaria.
If Aldritch was obsessed with eating gods, and Gwynevere escaped to Lothric, that's good reason for his cathedral to assault Lothric Castle and try to kidnap her. Note all the defenses and battlements prepared in Lothric. They were fighting a war with the Cathedral, and evidently lost.
If that's true though, not sure why Aldritch did not/could not consume Gwynevere completely. Maybe Rosaria is what "remains" of her.

In DaS 1 heavy weapons were by far more useful for PvE because you could break the bosses' poise easily.
Shit like the Estoc or the rapier (except Ricard's) for example were fucking useless because they had too little damage even buffed with max scaling and could hardly break anyone's poise.
Most STR weapons were too slow for PvP and useless against anyone with a faster weapon who reached the poise breakpoints (which was easy with Havel or Wolf rings).
In DaS 3 PvP, you mostly invade ganksquads, so being able to stunlock and one/twoshot a phantom is crucial.

Yeah, a fully leveled Sharp/Heavy/Refined Straight Sword will out-DPS just about anything else in the game. You can either hit a boss once with your Ultra Greatsword and pray to jesus that he doesn't kill you during the recover animation, or him him two or three times with your Straight Sword, deal way more damage, and be ready to block/dodge almost immediately.
Again, anything works in PvE if you're willing to make it work, but for Greatswords, that means having a lot of patience, and passing up damage opportunities that faster weapons would have no problem with.

Are straight swords straight up better than pure DEX weapons like katanas and curved swords as well. I always see them compared to big STR weapons, but never to DEX weapons. Yeah, pretty much. I think some of the curved swords got buffed in the recent calibrations, but Katanas generally suck. Counter is back to how it was in DS1, where it only affects thrust attacks and only during a very small window, so the DS2 days of broken-ass katana spam is long gone.

I don't even bother with the scaling desu, especially since the sl meta for pvp seems to be pretty low (80 according to plebbit and the dsg tripfags when it was 120 in das and 150 in das2).
I just use a raw Astora Straight sword, it already has 322 base phys damage with only the minimum requirement stats to wield it. I do nearly as much damage as STR weapons when I slap a buff on it.
Spending points in STR/DEX seems to be a waste when you can just pump VIG/END and still do as much damage.

No boss has access to the Storm Ruler, which therefore already puts DS3 on a massive advantage because Yhorm is in that group. He by itself can take care of the lion's share of ground-based bosses, while Nameless King maintains aerial superiority against, say, Storm King. Whatever is left can be mopped up by Sulyvahn and the rest.

Well we have to figure out wether or not the bosses are aware of each other's weaknesses, and more importantly, wether or not said weaknesses are present in the battlefield. If the Storm Ruler is and the Old Monk knows to get up to it and wield it, I'd say it's only fair to assume that the Primordial Crystal is too, and everyone knows its importance.
