Is it ever a good idea to redesign the main character of a franchise?

Maybe if you're updating a design, to match with current graphics or otherwise. Sometimes it's even fine as long as the redesign makes sense and isn't trying so fucking hard (see 2016 Conker) to be hip and current. Personally I think 2000-2004 are fine designs.
I'd say some good examples are the Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles or, almost more of a re-stylization than anything else, the figures in Disney Infinity.

Banjo and Kazooie's redesign is pretty good. The worlds and characters in Nuts and Bolts in general look good. It's a shame that the game wasn't what anyone was expecting. forcing Banjo Kazooie into the graveyard.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the 2015 one. His design didn't get bad up until 2016 when they decided he should be part frog.
