Super Metroid is one of the best games on the SNES and inspired an entire subgenre.
A Link to the Past is simply a good game and it took until the next game (Link's Awakening) to get the franchise to "legendary" status.

I've played neither. Really enjoyed Link's Awakening and Megaman X though if that counts.
