I think it actually was a pretty good fight. Two swords isn't a weapon combination any soldiers would have used in the battlefield but it's not unprecedented for expert swordsmen to use two (while more manageable weapon combinations like rapier and dagger actually were common during certain parts of history in duel and self-defence kind of contexts) and the fight portrayed it in such a way where it makes sense: it's not a matter of "increasing DPS" like it tends to be in games but defending yourself more effectively (indeed, the daggers used with rapiers often were specialized parrying daggers). "Dual-wielding" wasn't common because generally speaking a shield or buckler would be preferable but in the hands of an expert swordsman, particularly when fighting against multiple opponents? I could actually see it being a good idea.
Also, props for him wearing a helmet, his opponents not taking turns attacking and killing blows being struck in unarmoured parts of the body.

In the books he gives up his resurrection to bring catelyn stark back as lady stoneheart. She then leads his group to basically get revenge on those who tore apart her family and shit gets dark.

In the first book/season Ned Stark sends him out to bring the Mountain to justice. After Ned is wacked his team turns into a Robin hood like gang.
The show fucked them up by having them turn Gendry over to Melly Sanders when they really are good guys in the book, or at least were until Catelyn Stark get resurrected.
As much as I loved the tower of joy fight being shown, two sword Arthur Dayne triggered me too much. A guy whose entire gimmick was based around 1 sword, using two normal ones. Hell, two swords aren't even better against multiple opponents, as not even the best can effectively multitask that much. Shield would have been better for defense.
They also downplayed the role Oswall Whent had in that fight by killing him right off the bat.

I don't know how the fight was portrayed in the books or if the scene is something original to the series, but I think dual wielding did help to emphasize his superior swordsmanship skills. For example, Miyamoto Musashi (a legendary ronin, allegedly having won 60 duels, was famous for this style of combat) and it wasn't unprecedented in Europe either.

There were three kingsguard there, one of them was a huge motherfucker too (Ser Gerold Hightower)
Arthur Dayne (Dual wielder in show) used a greatsword in the books, it was the greatest non-valyrian steel sword, it was forged so well that it was on par with valyrian steel. The blade was also white. They made him some dual wielding spinner. His greatsword was named Dawn and it was so legendary that Ned personally took it after the battle and delivered it to Dayne's sister because it was their house sword.
Secondly, the man who stabs Dayne in the back was Howland Reed, he was supposed to have a spear and be a manlet. It's heavily implied that Howland did something crazy to save Ned from Dayne, used magic or warged into Dayne.
After the battle, Howland and Ned somehow tear down that entire tower, destroying it, again, heavily implied Howland used magic of some sort, he's a mysterious and powerful character we know little of in the books. They then use the stone from the tower to create individual resting places for all who died there, besides Ned's sister who he takes back to winterfell.

I know he's a semi-mythological figure but I didn't want to overload the post with multiple words implying uncertainty beyond "allegedly". However, whatever actually might have happened in his duels (if they did occur), The Book of Five Rings most certainly describes a fighting style involving two swords and since using two swords is also what European master swordsmen sometimes did (the video I linked mentions several treatises that feature it), him having used this style does seem plausible.
Besides, what I am getting at is that using two swords is something that's associated with expert swordsmen and expert swordsmen alone. The fact that one of the best-known examples has been attributed with clearly fictional superhuman feats doesn't take that away, it actually reinforces the idea that Dayne is at the absolute peak of human skill.
That being said, as he apparently was well-known for using one sword in the books, that's what he should have done in the series as well.

I am sure you CAN fight with two swords. I've done it, it takes like 20-30 hours of practice to not hit yourself or block your own strikes, and to have both weapons moving at once.
However its just not better than one weapon. It only theoretically has the higher potential, but honestly even a single weapon and an open hand is better, you can catch, grapple, put the extra hand on your weapon to push stronger, balance as you spin and dodge, etc.
Having both weapons moving forward at the same time, repeatedly, or blocking with one and striking with the other, is very hard and doesn't accomplish much in practice.
Your opponent learns to counter it faster than you learn to do it.
Musashi may have done it and displayed his skill in front of others, but I am sure not even he thought its more than a party trick.

I haven't practised any martial arts so I haven't developed an eye for judging the distances of when a sword would actually hit you, but to my unpractised eye it did look like the people were trying to hit each other. It certainly was a far cry from, say, Phantom Menace, where it's obvious for anyone that the strikes would miss even if the combatants did nothing about them. So in terms of theatrical fighting, I think it was pretty good.

I imagine big plot points will remain; Jon will return, Ramsey probably kills Roose etc. But the books are so different in actual plot there's no way George can turn back and make it run parallel to the show's plot.
