Anyone excited for the 1080?I have a 4k monitor so yes I am excited.

PC gaming hardware thread?
Battlestations?
Talk about the 1080?
I am getting a 1070 :^)
>>337030127
How about you wait for benchmarks first before making any decision?
Currently it's just all empty marketing talk. You don't seriously believe NVIDIA, do you?
>>337030127
>4k
>performance not even close to 4 time current gen
Enjoy silky smooth 18 fps fampai
>>337030127
The only talk here is that you got fucked by nvidia shills into believing it was a cheap card when its in fact 700 bucks.
http://www.gamersnexus.net/news-pc/2427-difference-between-gtx-1080-founders-edition-and-reference
>Every single instance of “Founder's Edition” can be replaced with the word “Reference,” using previous-gen nomenclature. There is not one difference in its market positioning. They are synonymous. NVidia has replaced its “Reference” name with “Founder's Edition.”
>There are not two GTX 1080 models made by nVidia. Only the “Founder's Edition” exists; there is not a cheaper card made by nVidia than the $700 Founder's Edition, which ships first.
>The “Founder's Edition” is not specially binned.
>The “Founder's Edition” is not pre-overclocked.
>The “Founder's Edition” uses the new reference cooler. The cooler is more-or-less identical to the previous reference models.
>This card is not "limited edition," despite its name that would indicate as much, and will run production through the life of the GTX 1080 product line.
Why would I be excited for a card that can only do 1080p?
>>337030451
>wait for benchmarks
honestly, not even him, i don't need a benchmark to tell me that nvidia is going to have the best top-end GPU this gen
>>337030642
>buying reference coolers
the only ones getting shafted are water-coolers, who have the money anyways, and dumbasses that don't know what a reference cooler is so fuck them
>>337030127
currently using a 4GB Vram 680 but im planning on upgrading next year around spring break. Im probably going to get a 1080. What CPU should I get?
>>337030338
You do know they defective items right?
Or did you break it on purpose?
>>337030712
This. Pascal is a good design. theyve shown that on the business and AI side.
>>337030695
ikr my current card does 7870
I cant wait to actually be able to play games at this resolution all the time
Inb4 devs care even less about optimisation after this
>>337030127
I don't think you're going to get single card 60fps performance at 4k with that card. It's not wildly better than the titan x and it still struggles a lot with open world games.
Source, I have a titan x.
>>337030712
>i don't need a benchmark
good goys like you is how you can sell cards that only run 75% of the RAM announced on the package.
>>337030484
spoken like a true console babby
>>337030943
I bought it on the last day of a promotion for the tomb raider game and Amazon fucked up sending the codes to where they sent me like 4 invalid codes for the game. Ended up not being able to get the game.
Fast forward 2 months later (1 month warranty was even up) and I used it as the reason for why I was requesting the return, and also saying that I was even more annoyed because the new GPUs are coming out and I need to return this GPU to afford it.
I'm guessing they let me slide because they know I'll probably be using their service to pre-order the card anyway. They did the same thing for my relative who bought the card later than I did too, so maybe they're just letting people refund 970s if bought within the year.
>>337031941
Yeah I'm sure me owning a console is why you will magically get 60 fps on 4 time the screen size of current gen by just getting 1.5* more processing power on your new card. Makes perfect sense.
>>337032120
Sure. Beggers can be choosy it seems.
>>337032023
In EU there is no such thing as "1 month warranty", you're guaranteed 2 years of warranty no matter what the product producer even says. Unless you mean purchase return which I believe is 1 to 3 months in EU depending on country.
Anyhow you could've easily just cited finding out about 3.5 as defect and they are obliged to take it.
>>337030943
I literally return shit all the time saying it's broken/defective
i always get my money back
>>337030127
If everything goes well and AMD doesn't step it up I'll pick up a 1080ti.
>>337031747
Titan X is moreso designed for architect builds like the K series video cards. Why else would it have 12gb VRAM. The build you have is the best for all around performance but when it comes to gaming the 1080 will stomp your Titan X by a lot especially with 4k.
>>337030889
I don't know what either of those are, will I get shafted if I get the reference edition?
>>337030127
No because my 670 is still enough for all the ugly shit the industry is throwing out currently.
And if theres a good looking game once or twice a year it still holds up easily.
>>337030127
1070 is fucking awesome and for 350 bucks.
>>337032120
>Witcher 3 gets 45 fps max settings on 980ti for 4k

>>337033306
What this guy said. Think of it this way 1080p = 1920x1080 which is a 16:9 box. 3840x2160 is NOT just twice of that. Doubling that 1920x1080 box is 1920x2160 or 3840x1080, you're missing HALF of the 3840x2160. 4k is literally 4 times the pixels of 1080p.
>>337033407
How is a product a meme? What do you think meme means?

Way better off waiting till Polaris if you have no card at all or a broken one, in the meanwhile. Otherwise waiting until next year when games are using the cards to see how they actually perform.

I'm pretty excited, but:
1. Bitcoin miners are going to take all the cards for months
2. I'm gonna wait until people actually get their hands on it and see the REAL stress tests, not just marketing from Nvidia
3. All newer games will use the 1080 as the standard, not look that much better than games from last year, but still require WAY higher specs to run

I think it's very exciting. As someone who has been buying 3d accelerator cards since 1995 (!) I can tell you young chaps that the pascal architecture is one of the most relatively powerful architectures of all time in this arena, if not THE most relatively powerful (based on price, time of release etc.)
It's truly some amazingly engineered stuff and their intent is to outright kill AMD out of the PC enthusiast market.
However, as a guy in my mid 30s, I no longer have any idea what I'd want a super powerful video card for. VR I guess, but the startup cost for vive is too high and I feel like it's actually not something I want to invite into my life-- I think home VR will be very bad for social relationships for the human species

would it even be worth getting a 1080 with that CPU, or would it just hold the 1080 back?
I want to upgrade from my 680 just because as powerful as it is, it runs so damn hot, but I'm not holding out hope for the 980 to get a significant reduction in price, and at least the 1080 is ridiculously powerful
Here's your fresh dose of $350 meme

even using more vram than the card has it shouldn't drop your fps like that. I would recommend downloading the WHQL drivers and installing, see if it fixes the issue.
Source? I have a 770 with 2gb vram and I ran 60fps max when it recommended 4.

Waiting for benchmarks/price drops/AMD before going with a legit GPU. Until then, im using my old 750Ti as it does fine with all the PC games I currently own.
Also, I'm not going to buy a reference card.

Kind of. I have to see the performance. I've been dying to upgrade my monitor above 1080p for a long while, and really don't want to have to dump 800-1000 bucks on two SLId cards just to get the same performance I get now at a higher resolution.
If these cards have enough juice to let me enjoy high settings at 60 fps and 1440p or better with just one I'll be thrilled.
Though the lack of hardware demanding games for the immediate future does kind of make me hesitant. Probably going to wait for the 1080 ti and buy the fuck out of that.
>>337037673
Well I mostly emulate PS2/Wii games and occasionaly play some new games like Dark Souls 3, MGSV

If him working for AMD is so important to you, might want to tell us why he's undermining them on a youtube channel they surely must be aware of by now.
>>337036968
My comp has 2x gtx 780 running in sli and I play that game with everything except grass density maxed out and it runs 60fps no problem at 1440p with 2x MSAA. I only have 3GB vram to play with.
The settings in that pic have been purposefully set up so that when vram is used up performance drops. The 970 is not a flagship card. They have maxed out the settings and increased AA to get this problem. All you would have to do is drop AA down to 2x and you could easily play that game at 1080p with high settings, perfectly reasonable for the 3rd strongest card in that series.
>>337037812
Doesn't Nvidia do planned obsolescence? You have to replace your cards every 2 years or else they start making your card perform worse with newer drivers.

Nvidia defence force here to miss the point and talk about how it's okay there's a massive glaring flaw in what the card was marketed as and the system itself believes to be the case, because you can run GTAV.
Not the fact it was used as a clear case where there IS a problem and it's not just hearsay based on experience. There's a fucking VRAM counter there, like in Max Payne 3.

there 3 time more xbox 360's, ps3's and nintendo wii's in circulating and being sold than there are xbox one's and ps4's
xbox360: ibm
>84 million units
ps3:nvidia
>83 million units
wii: ibm
>100 million units
= ~260 million units in circulation, with games still being made
ps4: amd
>35 million units
xbox one: amd
>20 million units
= ~55 million units with console sales decreasing month on month
amd barely owns the console market. and with microsoft giving intel and nvidia contracts to build the new upgradable pc's with their own hardware (along with amd), they'll gain as much from it as amd will.

It gets 130-200FPS with Vulkan in Doom 4, maxed out 1080p.
We can't directly compare to the other cards at the moment because they were done with the 60 FPS cap on and in DX. But we can compare the minimums. A 970 had a minimum of around 55 while the 1080 had a minimum of around 130. The question is, how much does Vulkan increase or hurt performance compared to DX?
since this is a computer thread, i need you to recommend me a new, affordable mouse /v/.

i wish i had screenshotted what he said to me.
>people still posting outdated benchmarks from individual games
Here are bench results from less than a month ago taken over a large number of games. Overall, AMD is currently winning, Nvidia may have had better performance when the 3xx series first launched but driver updates have turned that around since the AMD cards were superior on paper and the performance now reflects it. The only area that Nvidia wins is the very high end with the 980 ti which is imo the only reason to buy an Nvidia card from the 9xx series in any case.
>>337038593
1440p@120Hz is the only answer
>>337038876
Yeah but surely at only 27 inches the difference between 1440p and 4k is impossible to see
when will we know for sure that we're not getting jewed by this series like what happened with the 970?
>>337030127
>GTX 1080
AMD should be smart and call their GPUs 4K series (4K80, 4K90, 4K FURY etc)
>>337038301
I couldn't give a fuck what cards people buy, I'm not loyal to any company. That pic is hilarious calling the 970 a "flagship" card when there are two more powerful in the 900 series alone, and thinks it should be able to run a modern open world game full HD at max setting and 4X AA. The 4GB vram issue that card had was a shit move by them in how it was handled but the problem isn't anywhere near as bad and info like in that image is just desperation to make it one.
>>337038878
I'll wait for 1080ti then

From a high level, we tested each card on a high-end PC (4.2GHz overclocked i7-5930K), at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K with Ultra settings at the lower resolutions and Ultra or High at 4K. We included results from eight games, some newer and some slightly older: Batman: Arkham Origins, Fallout 4, GTAV, Hitman: Absolution, Metro: Last Light, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2013, and The Witcher 3. Here's how they stack up in terms of average and minimum frame rates across these games:
Just made this. Only took tests pitting only the 970 and the 390, but there are others were these two cards are involved.
>>337039060
I got the same CPU and also want to know if it'll just bottleneck one of these 1000 series cards
>>337039060
Depends on the games you play
Some that are cpu intensive like GTA V will have some lower performance, but overclocking can help to a degree
I just got a 7950 and a P2415Q. I don't really care. I won't be bothering with upgrading anything until a couple more years. I only play a couple 2-3 games anyway.

>>337038943
Stop calling it 1440p and no you can definetly see jaggies even at 2560x1440.
4k is better than WQHD, but price is a limiting factor. Good 4k panels are still $1000+ and to properly drive 4k you need a $600-$700 GPU.
Better to buy a good WQHD panel than a bad 4k panel.
