And as of late there has a been a large movement in CoD/BF fanbase asking for a return to WWII or a game set in WWI. CoD straight up ignored those people and went full BUT IN SPACE. There are war shooters and sci-fi shooters.
When CoD(war shooter) was selling 25+ millions units without problems, Halo(sci-fi) was also living through its golden era(at least sales wise) with 3, Reach and 4 selling fuckton.
And it was always like that. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Battlefield 1942 or 2 co-existed with UT(2003, 2004) and Quake 3 without any problems, you can draw the parallels for even earlier games.
CoD:IW is a jump from the "war shooter" niche to the "sci-fi shooter" niche, which was obviously a bad choice for activision since it alienated the fanbase. EA probably pissed in their pants when they saw that trailer.
