The PSX version is obviously the superior in this case.

I actually perfer the console version for all the exclusive content like co-op, system link multi, and what may be the best console port of the original games.

This.

The fact that they were able to get the game running on a 16 bit console is really quite the feat.
I'd be interested to look into how the development went down.
>>

Because normie casuals don't care about fast gameplay.

Has anyone ever thought that Doom 64 was merely a test to see if Quake could be ported to the N64?

I say this because I remember watching one of elbryan42's videos from several years back about how Wolfenstein 3D was basically a test to see if Doom could be ported to the Jaguar.
They did this by modifying some of the game mechanics in Wolfenstein, like infinite lives, treasures now act like the health potions in Doom and lives act like soul spheres.
The pistol, chaingun and rocket launcher are also modelled after the ones in Doom.

After thinking about it, I kinda wondered if the same thing is true for Doom 64, since there's definitely a lot more nitty-gritty to it than the other classic Doom games, like Quake. The game mechanics are also more complex than the original, and the weapons like shotguns, plasma guns, rocket launcher, etc definitely look similar to the ones in Quake.

What are your thoughts?

>tfw I've grown to love the DOOM 3 monster designs as well

Honestly thing most disappointing thing about DOOM 4 for me is the art design.

Everything looks so fucking generic and boring. Especially hell.

DOOM 1 - 3 had personality and identity. 3 may have been very different but it feels completely unique and its own beast. 4 just feels like an assembly line game.

From what I understand, the game was developed by Sculptured Software instead of id, like the other console ports.
That's most likely the reason the levels on the SNES are closer to the PC version than the others.
They basically called up id and asked if they could release it, and id of course gave them the go-ahead.

>>
>>337014806
Doubt it.

The game mechanics are literally the same as PC Doom outside of the Unmaker, which has no parallel with Quake

It has no other Quakeisms like room over room or 3D models

tl;dr you think too much and are probably autistic, also the changes for Jaguar Wolfenstein were just graphical as in merely replacing sprites, they had nothing to do with potentially porting Doom or not

I'm gonna be honest I just don't want to play anything on PC, I know its a shooter from the mid 90s but setting anything up in a PC is fucking impossible, and I first played it on my SNES so I consider it a console shooter first and foremost. When I jumped in the room with the key and galling gun there were a lot of guys and I got pretty frantic with the shotgun and just ended up killing everyone I guess. Well, there's definitely more complex things going on in Doom 64, such as The Terraformer where you have to wait for a crusher to make holes in the floor in order to progress.
The Demon Keys to upgrade the Unmaker also set the game apart from the others so that the levels aren't self-contained, in that you keep the keys after you leave the level and need them to make the final boss easier.
Things like the spears in Hectic and enemies fading in instead of simply teleporting in also contribute to this.

See, this is when somebody that actually knows how to play a game plays the new Doom: it actually looks good.

Every time they show off a new game, no matter what it is, they will always be slow and look around a lot for the sake of showing off the game. Is this video, you can barely tell what the fuck is going on because how fast he's moving around, which isn't good for showing off what the game looks like.

There's a strong difference between playing to market a game, and playing to play the damn game.

From what I understand, the 32X essentially doubles the genesis' processor word size but NOT its processor speed, so while it essentially makes the genesis a 32 bit console, it's not as capable as the Saturn, a standalone 32 bit console.

The 32x also increases the pixel density and color palate, though to what extent I don't know.

The 32X makes no changes to the sound chip, which is located in the main genesis console.

Based on this information, it's entirely possible Doom could have run as a standalone genesis port, but it would look visually even worse than the SNES version, would sound just as bad as the 32X version, and would likely have to cut out even more levels (that or keep the same amount of levels but the cartridge sale price would have to be like $180 to cover the cost)

Because it makes for a poor demo, footage from a seasoned PC player is very hard for normies to digest (and more importantly, speculate over) because the camera is snapping between targets so rapidly that they can't even get a good look at them, the developers want to showcase the movesets and designs of the enemies and levels and the functionality of all the weapons, not just the player tear-assing through said levels.

The genesis processor is mad fast for a 16 bit console, so it's not that big of a loss for the 32X. The genesis processor is actually closer to that of the Saturn/PS1/N64 in speed than it is the SNES.

It sounds like the original DOS release, which yeah still sounds better than all the non-SNES/PS1 ports, but still, a game released in the 7th generation shouldn't sound worse than the SNES. PS1 gets an excuse because it uses a different soundtrack.

Personally, I believe the original cover art had intentions to show two things: You are doomed and your allies can not save you. This offered consumers of the early 90s that the space marine (you) would be any other generic space marine which clearly was shown while playing throughout the game with all the corpses. The ally running towards you also was a way to market that the original Doom had co-operative play for you and your friends to play together. That's how I felt with the original cover art and the intentions the designers had at the time (no concept of Doomguy). They may had shown in the manual that the space marine was this badass who went to Hell and back, but ultimately it was something that was tossed in without much thought into at all.

The new cover art essentially takes the homage of what fans have over two decades created via speculations of Doomguy's prowess and decided to shift Doom from being doomed marines to Doomguy (not us).

I really liked the last trailer they brought out, it was a neat homage to the original cover art, but followed it up that Doomguy was never doomed in the first place.
